Obama's Legal View of DOMA a Mystery
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that President Barack Obama believes the Defense of Marriage Act “should be changed” but that he does not know whether the president believes the law is constitutional.

“I have not heard the president intone what he believes the constitutionality of the law is,” Gibbs said in response to a question from The Advocate. “I know that he believes the law should be changed.”

6. Four words come to mind.
"God's in the mix."

And nine more:

I don't understand why anyone thinks it's a mystery.

20. Because the affixing of blame is an important function here on DU..
If (when) the Democrats do more poorly than expected at the polls the blaming will begin, it will be the fault of the GLBTs, the "purists" and all those who are insufficiently impressed by the sheer awesomeness of Obama and the Sensible and Pragmatic Moderate Centrist Dems.

No blame whatsoever will be affixed to politicians who do everything in their power to denigrate, despise and humiliate what should be their strongest voting bloc(s).

11. No it isn't
the man appoints SCOTUS and other federal judges for one thing. It also might give an indication of the depths of his opposition to the law.

16. I don't think the 'depths' of his opposition are necessarily bounded by his 'legal view' of DoMA.

He may think or feel, strongly or otherwise, that its bad public policy, and not have studied it 'legally,' as a lawyer/judge might.

12. Entire sentences would be helpful....
...i.e.: verb, subject, etc., all put together in a coherent sentence, instead of this cryptic shorthand, would be most helpful to those of us not blessed with the gift of mindreading.

That, and supporting facts -- or at least your opinion, supported by an idea of the path you took to come to your opinion -- would be even more helpful.

What an odd way to put it. Although I must say that mostly what he does is "intone," and I'm tired of listening to it.

15. Notice how he doesn't say "repeal"
He says the law needs to be "changed."

This is how you carefully phrase things when you want to play both sides of the fence.

I still want someone to ask Obama why he supported marriage equality in the late 90's and then reversed course when he ran for higher office.

That question has yet to be asked of him directly.
