I've seen this a million times here, but now that I want to use it I can't remember. |
|
Could somebody here please remind me what the name of that "law" is which basically states that the more one mentions, or makes reference to, or lashes out against homosexuality, the more likely they are to be in denial of their own urges? I need it to bonk a YouTube comment bigot on the head with.
Thanks! :)

2. lol -- no, that's not it. |

I've seen it referred to here on the DU time and again as (Somebody's) Law.
And my mind's still drawing a blank.

6. Don't know of any "law" per se..... |
|
...but there is the study by Henry Adams, et. al. from 1996: http://danielasartori.com/homophobia_homosexuality_Adams_Wright_Lohr.pdf">Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?;) - Hope this helps.....

7. How about just making an argument for social justice and full equality for LGBT people? |
|

Instead of slumming into the high school antics of calling an openly homophobic bigot a closet case.
There is no 'law' by the way, but there is one study that has been discredited numerous times.

12. Not a bad point; at the same time, the list of closeted gay people who had careers attacking |
|
openly gay people is as long and storied as any other list.

14. Every 'straight' column will always be longer than the 'gay' column if you control for sexuality |
|
when you divide a comprehensive list into the two categories. Even the most pro-gay, uncloseted gay person who is reasonable will concede that there are more 'straight' people, however defined, than gay people.
That said, no matter how firmly and sincerely believed by extremely decent DU members here, it behooves me to point out that it is fallacious to maintain (or even imply) that closeted gay people share nothing in common.
If we can all agree that repression of one's sexuality leads - in most normal people - to mental illness, then we should be able to agree that the closet, ITSELF, perverts self-image and makes closeted gay people MORE homophobic than people who are not denying themselves the perfectly natural expression of their sexuality every single waking minute of the day. And I am speaking, partially, from personal firsthand experience.
Cheers. :)

That's more of a psychological defense mechanism.

15. I'm not aware of a casual "law" name for that phenomenon. |
|
Clinically, it's psychological projection, or simply projection--the process of externalizing one's feelings onto something else, be it other people, objects, the weather, etcetera. It's also referred to often as protesting too much, after Shakespeare's line in Hamlet.
