"Hernandez, who confirmed he is gay to Instant Tea, is also a member of the City of Tucson Commission on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues. Of Giffords, Hernandez says, “She’s been a great ally to the LGBT community." http://www.afterelton.com/people/2011/01/daniel-hernandez-gay-saves-life-gabrielle-giffordsMy guess... this will never make the major media...

4. And, predictably, leaves out the GLBT stuff: |
|
>>>Authorities also singled out Daniel Hernandez Jr., one of Giffords' interns, for his efforts during the shooting.
Hernandez, 20, a junior at the University of Arizona majoring in political science, had joined Giffords' office last Monday and was working at Saturday's event.
After shots were fired, Hernandez, who was certified as a nursing assistant in high school, checked on several victims before seeing Giffords slumped, contorted, on the floor.
He put her head in an upright position against his chest and applied pressure to her wound to stanch the bleeding. He also asked Giffords questions, wanting to know whether she understood that help was on the way, and she would respond by squeezing his hand.
"My job came to be trying to make sure she knew there was someone there with her," he said.>>>>
As I said.... *invisible*.

5. If I am being credited for saving someone's life, I would not care if they said I was gay or not. |
|
They also don't tell us his religious faith or if his parents are married, but I bet they are facts important in his life.

6. Hard to know what he cares about; not having spoken to him. |
|
And it's beside the point, as far as my comment is concerned.

17. Is it possible the LA Times and other new organizations never spoke to him |
|
either, and therefore, don't know if is gay or don't want to out him if he doesn't want others to know? I know this is an unwinnable argument, but it really isn't that big of a deal that didn't say he was gay.

7. Hate to be 'that person' but... |
|
Why does it matter that he's gay?
I mean, it's not like his being gay likely had any bearing on doing a heroic deed.

8. Matters because we are invisible. If he were black that would show up on a camera. |
|
Speaking broadly we are fucking tired of being invisible. Got it?

9. Invisible or not, it doesn't make a difference if he's gay. It's about what he did. n/t |
|
If he were black, that wouldn't matter either.

Not my problem if you can't be bothered to discuss something important.
Fortunately for me, someone else posted a link that explains quite a bit about why it matters.

11. Invisible Bias. Read this, and then look up.... |

http://www.aas.org/cswa/status/2005/JUNE2005/InvisibleBias.html...everything related to and connected to Gordon Allport's, "The Nature of Prejudice." (still in print at B and N as of three or four years ago.)

Get a hold of the Allport book if you can.
If I weren't so cheap I'd buy a new one. OTOH, it's got lots of irreplaceable underlining and notes.
Every time I read it a new lightbulb goes on somewhere in my head. In most cases it's a bulb that WAS on at one time but fizzled out.
"Yeah... I USED to know that!"
There's also a lot of stuff about his work on the web.

18. Not all of "we" are so tired that "we" think every time any queer does something |
|
good that he should be identified as such. I am perfectly content knowing who I am without every blurb about me saying I am gay first. The next "we" have a vote about this topic, can you let me know so I can participate? Or is what "we" all think decided by others?
