Gay Marriage: Partisan Bliss
Glenn Greenwald

<http://www.salon.com/news/gay_marriage/index.html?story=/opinion/greenwald/2011/02/24/bliss>

But for those loyal Obama supporters who spent two years defending the administration's DOMA position on this ground: if they have even a minimal amount of intellectual honestly, shouldn't they now criticize the President's reversal, this new refusal to defend DOMA? If they really believed what they were saying for the last two years -- that a President is required to defend the constitutionality of all statutes -- then shouldn't they be vocally condemning Obama now for doing exactly that which they insisted he has no power to do?{/i}

1. Stop. Obama *finally* listened. No sense to continue this divide. They were wrong;
we were right. Enough said. Let's move on.

3. Very true, but let's pick the issues we want to not move on from carefully.
This is a win for all of us. Yes, they were wrong procedurally, but I think most of them were with us substantively. We won the procedure argument, let's now work together on the substance.

4. If I agreed with your assumption that they were with us
I might agree with moving on. But I don't.

I strongly feel underneath all the "infighting" is a strong current of homophobia* on some level. People generally do not react with strong emotion towards something that does not effect them unless they feel threatened by it.

I think its wise to learn from it and work on educating supporters and non-supporters of how homophobia effects the discourse of our claiming of our civil rights.

*Most is not all gay people even have some level of internalized homophobia when you scratch deep enough, myself included.

5. Agreed. But I still wonder:
did they make they're determinations this week (no defending Bushistas as well as DOMA) only to escape criticism of not defending unionized public workers?

6. Well, we heard a lot from "legal experts" here that Obama HAD to defend
it and had no choice...they're surprisingly silent now.

7. I am sorry but I am glad he changed his stance and I am not going to fret about
what he said before or the reasons. And anyone who supported his position before has no need to apologize about it as far as I am concerned. I am just glad the president is on the right side now. Done deal for me.
