Every time a sex scandal hits DU |
|
i am glad i am not straight. I see the differences in attitudes between LGBT people and straight people, and frankly I prefer our attitude.
Yeah, there was some stupidity and bad judgment but the world has not ended. I still love his politics. And I supported him for his political beliefs, not his sexual mores.
Also, Happy LGBT Pride Month everybody. :loveya:

5. Can someones "sexual mores" affect your opinion of a politician? |
|
Edited on Tue Jun-07-11 10:24 AM by Renew Deal
Is there anything a politician can do in a sex scandal that would affect your opinion of that politician? Do you consider the coverup part of the "sexual mores?"

8. yes, if there was some HUGE hypocrisy involved. if someone voted against gay rights |
|
Edited on Tue Jun-07-11 10:29 AM by La Lioness Priyanka
consistently while engaging in gay sex. or voted againt abortions, while getting one when convenient. sure, i would judge them. if they voted against both gays and drugs, and had drug filled sex orgies, sure i would judge them.
of course weiner lied about it. i would too . its something he thought was private and about his sex life. i think lying in this situation is very normal.
if you ask me what i masturbate to, i would lie as well. because its personal and i dont think you need to know.

this is why stories like this actually effect politics when it shouldn't. This country has a huge problem with sexuality in general. I prefer your attitude, as well as Europe's attitude.

12. "troussage de domestique" |
|
I'm sure you heard about this... "The journalist and philosopher Jean-Francois Kahn dismissed the case as a "troussage de domestique", a phrase suggestive of French aristocrats having non-consensual sex with servants. He later apologised and quit journalism." http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/03/france-women-sexism-strauss-kahn

15. I think your statement unnecessarily divides DU. |

If there exists some consideration, some fact that becomes more apparent from the point of view of a GLBT person, why not just argue to support that fact?

23. I missed this topic, but as you know by now, I agree with you entirely. |
|
People may think I'm kidding or being campy when I say that I'm grateful I'm gay - but I'm really serious about that, moreso as I get older, and topics like this show me how backwards and unfulfilled are people who consider themselves (or claim to be) heterosexual in America.
NONE of my gay friends IRL would EVER EVER EVER condemn me for flirting with guys online, or for even flirting in real life. Flirting is NOT sex and NOT infidelity and while Weiner had assumed an important position that required discretion and he failed to exercise that discretion, he is likely not much different than many men are. Just another guy who is sociable, likes people, likes sex, enjoys being a man, and there you go.
But yes, we go through these conversational acrobatics every single time a sex scandal hits the news cycle. Tiresome. :eyes:

25. Thinking about this a little more, I believe that GLBT and breeder couples differ |
|
in terms of, it seems to me that partners in heterosexual couples are, far more often than gay couples, neurotically possessive of their partner's time, energy and attention, almost like cultish mind control, "you are mine, all MINE!! 24/7!!"
Gay couples are much more relaxed about such things. FWIW.
By the way, Happy Pride, Lionness! Are you marching this year?

29. I wanna say it's because gay couples don't have to deal with the gender thing. |
|
Edited on Wed Jun-08-11 04:42 PM by Iggo
That there's a level of understanding that may exist for gay couples that doesn't exist for hetero couples because men know what it's like to be men and women know what it's like to be women and y'all can skip that step without arguing about it.
But again, I'm just guessing.
(EDIT: I'm gonna leave that up there as an example of typing before thinking. But on rereading it, GAWD it sounds terribly naive!) :hide:

Beautifully said. The OP as well as the content of many of your replies.
I feel much the same way.. Unless it's one of the politicians that have made it a career to judge, and regulate others personal lives, I really don't give a shit what they do in theirs as long as it is with other consenting people (i.e. rape is of course a different creature).
He may not be my rep, but I'd happily support and vote for him if he was.
