Gay Teens Barred From School Dance
brave kids--to be out in Utah--I can't imagine doing this when I was their age

http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/12/120304dance.htm

A school principal refused to let two gay 17-year-old boys attend a high-school dance as a couple without permission from their parents.

Tom Worlton, the principal at Copper Hills High School, said he was concerned for the safety of the boys who might be taunted by others.

"There's a danger, and I believe the parents ought to be aware of that," Worlton said Wednesday. "If parents were OK with it, I'd make no judgment."

1. Same-sex couples are barred from dances here...
no questions asked. Nothing is going to change that, though. The school administration (as well as much of the city) is very homophobic.

2. There's something called a lawsuit.
And it's a good argument if it's a public school. As the children of taxpayers, the kids have a right to go to their schools' functions.

3. I dunno if he means it, but...
Even though I'm a queer, I'd have some second thoughts about letting gay people into a "straight" (mostly) dance, not because I hate gay people, BUT because the gay kids might get the SHIT kicked out of them. Other than that, rock on.

4. Gotta get used to living in a straight majority. . .
. . . and homophobes have to get used to the idea they don't have the right to "beat up" gay folks. It's good for everyone involved, IMO.

And I'd be glad to get stabbed and shot for gay rights.

Edit: I mean this.

7. If we remain in the closet...
...aren't we giving the haters what they want? All the while losing more and more rights?

8. well...
I chose to remain in the closet to my family so I don't become an outcast, although my friends mostly all know.

9. Don't take what I said so literal!
Telling LGBT kids not to attend a dance is basically forcing kids to remain in the closet.

If the Stonewall riots didn't happen, would LGBT Americans have as many rights as they do now?

Do you see what I am saying?
