1. I think you've misunderstood

Not that it makes it any better, but the typical mantra -- and this letter sounds no differently -- is that they're "taking marriage ," not "taking marriage ." To wit, the RRight is saying that gay marriage is, functionally, the end of marriage. That's why the word "defend" is there so often.

2. They use a very Rovian tactic:

Putting particular words in particular places to connotate something without actually saying it.

"Taking" implies that the evil homos are coming to steal marriage away. They could've said "being granted" or "being given" but they chose "taking."

Just like how Bush used "Saddam" and "9-11" together in sentences so often, he managed to convince people that Iraq was linked to 9-11 without coming right out and saying it (that part was saved for Cheney.)

So here's yet one more armchair quarterback with advice for the Dems: start using this tactic. Frame the debate by using particular words. Link "gay marriage" with "civil rights" or "human rights." Don't call it "gay rights," call it "gay equality." And so on...
