The Alaska Constitution already forbids same-sex marriage but some lawmakers want that expanded to include benefits following a state Supreme Court ruling that ordered Alaska to provide the same-sex partners of public employees with the same benefits as received by married workers.
The court ruled in October that denying the benefits violates the Alaska Constitution's equal-protection clause. (story)
The bock implementation of the ruling a group of legislators in both houses are proposing to amend the marriage ban to say that not only is marriage between a man and a woman the only union valid in the state but also opposite-sex couples are the only ones "to which the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities or effects of marriage shall be extended or assigned."
