SF Mayor Undeterred By Gay Marriage Foes
http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/12/122104newsom.htm

In a CNN interview on Monday Newsom was asked if he felt that his decision last February to allow same-sex couples to marry would hurt his political career.

The mayor had a short answer.

"Who cares," he told the network. Newsom said he never ran for San Francisco mayor to use it as a stepping stone.

whoo hoo! Go Gavin

That is one of the best responses from a politician I have ever heard. We need more leaders like Newsome.

The Mayor of San Francisco is not "taking a risk" in issuing gay marriage licences. He's simply delivering to a large portion of his constituency.

Now, had he gone to Sacramento and campaigned for a statewide marriage law, that would have been brave. But a few thousand licences in San Francisco added $$$s to the city coffers and allowed Newsome to claim he was more liberal than portrayed in his fight with Gonzales.

Besides, Newsome knew fully well that the California Supreme Court would throw out the licences. EVERYONE knew that.

3. Your being cynical
A politician that acts for the greater good irrespective of his or her political career? I was going to offer a positive response until I read your post, back to reality, thanks. I agree completely.
