Teen: School failed to ensure safety
Former student says he was assaulted because he's gay

By Sheila Stogsdill
Special to the Globe
3/5/06

GROVE, Okla. - A teenager, who says he is gay, is alleging that Grove School officials failed to provide him with a safe environment, thus creating a hostile climate, which he says led to another student assaulting him.

An attorney for Michale D. Bullis, 18, of Wyandotte, has sent a notice of tort claim - a document signaling his intentions to sue - against the Grove Public Schools and the Grove School Board of Education. The school and the board received a copy of the notice last week.

Bullis is seeking in excess of $10,000 in damages. He is being represented by Erik Johnson, a Miami attorney.

1. More from the same article ...
The animosity between the teenagers may have been triggered by an incident on a school bus the month before.

The suspect in the November incident told police that in October, he was riding a school bus back to the high school from a school assembly. He said he was sitting one seat behind Bullis while Bullis "was talking about his boyfriend," the report states. The suspect told authorities he was unable to move from his seat because all the other seats were full.

So see? It was all the gay kid's fault since he was flaunting his lifestyle. :sarcasm:

Whenever I hear of a story like this, it makes me wonder what would happen if we starting going out and smacking straight folks around whenever they started talking about their spouses/boy- or girl-friends in public. After all, shows like "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire," "The Bachelor" and "Cheaters" tell us all we need to know about that sinful heterosexual lifestyle. :eyes:

4. The lad is 16
and thus likely has no money. Barring Bullis being wealthy or related to a lawyer that means no lawyer to take a suit.

5. OMG -- Download the article
Look at the "responses" as posted -- they are blaming the victim comparing homosexuality to bestiality, and saying he would not have been assaulted if he had KEPT HIS MOUTH SHUT !! OMFG -- I posted a response in protest: let's see if they add it to the list (I will be listed as AW) BTW -- I am only about an hour from Grove, so I completely believe this happened.

6. I just read he article
and read the comments. It's a Missouri paper so I wouldn't be surprised if these knuckle dragging mouth breathers are from Missouri. Sometimes I am so disgusted with living in this state. I posted my own comments on the paper and if they don't approve them I will be calling the paper until they do.

7. Hey -- they actually posted my response!
Here 'tis: ANW writes:
"So these people are blaming the victim? He cannot talk about his boyfriend for fear of his life? So sometimes it is OK to assault/beat, perhaps kill another human simply because he shares different feelings or points of view than you? What a chilling indictment of the mentality of some people! I hope this young man walks away with the Grove, OK school board's treasury..."

Meanwhile, I will wait to hear what happens...
