White said the United States has gotten away from God, in part by allowing homosexuality to "run rampant."
Homosexuality is a sin, and the plight of gays and lesbians should not be compared to that of blacks, White told lawmakers.

"Homosexuality is a decision, it's not a race," White said. "People from all different ethnic backgrounds live in this lifestyle. But people from all different ethnic backgrounds also are liars and cheaters and malicious and back-stabbing."

White said he has thought about why God created different races. Each race has certain gifts, he said.

Blacks are gifted at worship and celebration, White said.

"If you go to a black church, you see people jumping up and down because they really get into it," he said.

Whites are good at organization, White said.

"You guys do a good job of building businesses and things of that nature, and you know how to tap into money," he said.

"Hispanics were gifted in family structure, and you can see a Hispanic person, and they can put 20, 30 people in one home."

The Japanese and other Asians are inventive, and "can turn a television into a watch," White said. Indians are gifted in spirituality, he said.

"When you put all of that together, guess what it makes: It forms a complete image of God," White said.

It's because he's too busy looking at his T-Bills and analyzing stocks - in other words, he's being really white that day.

11. Yesterday - I saw a glowing tribute for an upstanding Christian...
...who has done nothing but give to his community. The televised tribute I saw even dared to mention the word Jesus (major network). Because of the fact that Jesus asks us to shine a light on hypocrisy by our acts; I felt it was my duty as someone who respects the true teachings and examples that Jesus set; to mention a little something about what this man truly contributed to the community...he may have helped some, but he hurt others.

12. I totally agree with you...
However, why say all of these things now that he is dead? It seems pointless.

16. I don't think we're dealing with "reality-based" people.
I'm with you Allen. Homophobic rhetoric is wrong (and incites evil, imho) and I don't approve of it: whether it comes from a football "star" or LDS elder, Baptist preacher, Catholic priest, government official or fellow DUers. I'm willing to engage with thinking people about LGBT issues but I will not condone a mindset that suggests you and I must love the toxicity out of the faithful bigots of Christendom. Personally, I stand up to oppression and ignorance. I will not rationalize or justify homophobia under any circumstance.

Thanks for taking a leadership role here lately, I've noticed you're on the receiving end of a couple of unnecessary "drama threads". Don't cave. :pals:

15. I don't know.. maybe it was just the way I was raised...
not to speak ill of the dead.

And your sentiments about Reggie White HAVE been expressed ad naseum here at DU. (That's my personal opinion, not speaking as a mod.)

17. You might have me confused w/someone else...
...this is the first I have posted about him. I have seen some other stuff about him on DU and I can see how it might be annoying to hear someone complain about the same thing all the time.

Regarding your comments: I absolutely respect your point of view and see it only as an expression of your compassion.

I mainly posted this because of the blind eye being turned by the media. When I initially saw the article I posted, I was reminded of who this guy truly was and thought I should share this with others.

Regarding the dead, I think it is important to respect the feelings of the family, etc. I also think that being tasteless (an example would be Space Shuttle jokes...I have heard them believe it or not) is uncalled for.

But when the media is clearly displaying a limited, inaccurate and seemingly biased portrait of a man; It is DU and other alternative media sources that provide a forum for finding the truth about people, especially leaders, dead or alive.

Remember when Reagan died? It was only here, AAR and other places like it, where you could hear some balance.

18. Ad Nauseum?
Edited on Wed Dec-29-04 02:44 PM by arwalden
Well, I suppose people have the right to have compassion for the dead... never mind about the living.

Who would have guessed that speaking out against bigotry and homophobia would illicit such a response. I'm sorry you think it's nauseating to hear and read the complaints. How do you think it compares with actually living with the bigotry that White encouraged?

Most people here don't know the HALF of it and what it's like to have to actually deal with the real-life effects caused and encouraged and validated by outspoken celebrity bigots and homophobes like White. Then to have to deal with their apologists and followers and fans... :eyes: then to catch grief from actually getting angry and speaking out against it?

How about those who SUFFER real physical and emotional damage because others are motivated and inspired by the hatred spewed by folks like White? Whether it's physical violence, property damage, or denial of basic rights and equality... people DO suffer and White's words encourage and affirm people to be just as BIGOTED as he was.

White's bigotry and homophobic words planted the seeds of hate in fertile impressionable minds of his young fans. It also certainly planted the seeds of self-loathing and low esteem in the minds of gay youth who might have admired him for his athletic abilities. -- That's something we'll ALL have to deal with... ad nauseum... throughout another whole generation.

You're nauseated at our outrage, eh? Wow. -- I'm nauseated at the apologists and white-washers and excuse-makers who want to pretend that nothing ever happened. I'm sickened to see how many people around here believe that White's death is a magical shield from criticism... or that his death erases all the evil things he did and said against us.

It doesn't.

Fuck that shit!

Truthpusher makes a good point about the mainstream media glossing over Reggie White's hateful comments. But that was SIX YEARS AGO. The topic has been discussed to death on DU. There are three threads about this on this forum alone, not to mention the countless others on General Discussion and The Lounge.

If you want to talk about homophobes, there are plenty of ones that are still living for you to criticize. Reggie White is dead and can not continue to make homophobic remarks.

Besides, who cares what Reggie White thinks anyway? The main passage in the Bible that condemns homosexuality is in the same book that prohibits the touching of pig skin (Leviticus 11 : 7) I'm sure this irony was not lost on America.

It would be far more productive if we concentrated our energy on people like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell.

23. Trust me, most of America would never pick up on that irony.
They don't read all of their bibles anyway, they just know what their pastor and people like Reggie White have said about what's in the book.

Besides, "everyone knows" that the passages that appear to condemn something Christians regularly do aren't supposed to be taken literally. :eyes:

but I picked up on it and as a result, can't take anything he says seriously. I think we should concentrate on people who do things like this:

10. The first time I heard of this guy ...
... he was already dead.

Am I out totally of it? Or was he really not impotant?

Did this guy really stir up anything? Or did he just say bad things?
