Was Johnny Depp the "stereotype" gay in "Pirates of the Caribbean?" |
|
It took me watching it twice for it to dawn on me that gays were being mocked - I think, maybe??
Opinions?

1. I don't see it. I have watched both movies several times |
|
and don't get that at all.
I think it is a reaction to the eyeliner.

2. Jeez, everything's a conspiracy anymore. And everybody's a victim. |

You know what, sometimes a silly movie is just a silly movie.
There's not a hidden message in everything you know. Sometimes an apple is just an apple and a freaky insane pirate is just a freaky insane pirate.

And he is exuding some serious pheromones with the leading lady. Hardly gay. Remember how the compass responded when each of them held it in their hand?

12. Well, I'm embarrassed AND a dummy! Of course he was drunk! I don't know |
|
why I didn't realize that. I think maybe it was what another poster pointed out - that the eyeliner was misleading - add that to his "swagger" and I put 2 and 2 together and got 5!

Poor Keith. I understand they had some misgivings about his playing Jack Sparrow's dad in Pirates III for fear he might fall off the boat.

8. I thought he was a lot more macho in 2 than 1, in 1 he was landsick |
|
ever been on a boat for a while, then come ashore and everything feels rocky? That was my impression of him. Also, getting slapped by old girlfriends helped. Effeminate at times, perhaps, but that doesn't make him gay for me. In Pirates 2, he was much less effeminate, not as wobbly either.
Of course, I missed the JarJar controversy, except for detesting the character overall I mean.

And he had style. And he liked his booze. And he enjoyed frolicking on the beach.
Hell, maybe I'm gay too.

I absolutely LOVE his character... |
|
If you watch the first installment, it explains why he acts that way. Never did I think 'being stereotypically gay' or making fun of flamboyant gay males at all. I just think he's brilliant. Plus, I think they purposefully turned up the heat with him and Keira this time around so that people would stop with the 'gay' thing. That's just my opinion, but there was some serious sexual energy between the two of them. I was even getting hot during some of those scenes...

15. In the last interview he gave, John Lennon told "Playboy". . . |
|
he didn't like to explain his songs (they'd asked him to throw out one-liner explanations as they tossed titles to him), because invariably there'd be people who'd disagree and he'd have to waste time debating what was essentially an individual's personal belief. Sure enough, as he responded to Playboy's volley of titles, I caught myself mid-thought, poised to contest what he said.
It's the same with every work of art: You'll see in what you wish to see and the validity of your beliefs will be tempered only by the power of your own opinion.
(And for the record, "Strawberry Fields" is not about. . .)

22. I think he's one of the greatest actors of his generation... |
|
I've loved damn near everything I've seen him in...
He doesn't pick his roles for potential box office success, but for the challenge they present. When something like "Pirates" comes through and blows everything else away, I'd say he's earned it.
Of course, I've got a weakness for pirate movies. Always have had, for some reason. Hell, I even enjoyed "Cutthroat Island," and NO ONE liked that movie.

But I kinda liked Benny and Joon, too. It was sweet, and he was odd, but charming. I think he searches out unusual characters. The roles are not all similar, but they do have that in common.

Great character.
But, then again, I think that's how he chooses a role...he looks for a character he can become and just moves in.

Men in the 18th century had a different idea of what was fashionable. men wore tight fitting silks, elaborate wigs, and full white-face (lead based!) make up for formal occasions. oh honey, drag queens ain't got nothing on these 18th century fops on the grande tour of Europe. Fop clothing was the HEIGHT of masculine european fashion in the mid 1700s. the term "macaroni", as in "yankee doodle" refers to just this kind of man. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=&imgrefurl= http://footguards.tripod.com/06ARTICLES/ART25_macaroni.htm&h=438&w=316&sz=39&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=u-8QTRLUzZZ34M:&tbnh=127&tbnw=92&prev=/images%3Fq%3D18th%2Bcentury%2Bmacaroni%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D

He's certainly flamboyant but his character draws from a number of influnces. He may come off as a bit gay, but I don't think that was intentional on his part. He played it brillantly.

i didn't see it so i can't comment on his portrayal of gays, but it seems so unlikely he'd be mocking anyone. supposedly it was more a throwback to errol flynn as the swashbuckler.
johnny depp is a great actor and an enlightened human being. so, i say no.
