Judge: Gay Union Assets Must Be Equitably Divided
(Woodbury, New Jersey) In what is believed to be the first case involving the division of assets when a domestic partnership ends in New Jersey a judge has ruled that property must be divided between each partner.

The case before Family Court Judge John Tomasello involved a woman who had separated from her same-sex domestic partner.

In his ruling Tomasello said the couple had to equitably divide up assets from the home they owned.

The women began a relationship in 1999. When the Domestic Partnership Act went became law in 2004 the couple was among the first to register. They split up before civil unions were legalized last year.
