Conservative political action groups are lobbying Vermont lawmakers to remove four of the five judges on the state Supreme Court for the 1999 ruling that paved the way for civil unions.

The four judges who serve six year terms are up for renewal on the bench. The decision will be made by the Legislature. The fifth seat on the Supreme Court is vacant.

One of the judges opposed by conservatives was not even on the bench when the gay unions case came up.
