Interesting poll on pbs.org - "Homophobia Questionnaire"
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/assault/etc/quiz.html
(Memorize the score options and read the questions over twice; the wording might inadvertently trip you up.)

36 - Your score rates you as "non-homophobic."

In his 1996 study of 64 white, male college students, Dr. Henry Adams classed 29 participants as "non-homophobic." Their mean score was 30.48. This is not conclusive, however. Dr. Adams, the researcher who helped develop this scale, writes that "a major difficulty of this area of research is in defining and measuring homophobia." Elsewhere, he cautions: Since there is no universally accepted definition of homophobia, the scales currently in use may not measure all aspects of homophobia.

2. I got a 7
It is shocking some of the questions they have. You would think they could get a lower average than 38

3. Yes you're right, the wording can be a little tricky if you don't read carefully!
I did pretty well but then I'm gay myself. :D

7. Let's see, I'm rated as "high-grade non-homophobic."

I should hope so. Or is the test only valid for straight people?

In his 1996 study of 64 white, male college students, Dr. Henry Adams classed 29 participants as "non-homophobic." Their mean score was 30.48, however, placing most of the men outside of this sub-group. Dr. Adams reported that he had difficulty finding heterosexual men whose scores ranked them as high-grade non-homophobic

64? Doesn't seem like much of a sample.

8. actually some questions would be only valid for straights
I marked sometimes for gay people make me nervous since if I am around a hot gay man I get nervous. I don't think that is what the makers of the test envisioned.

10. 8- There's one that trips me up though..
Asking if I try to figure out if other people I meet are gay. Well yes, but being gay I have a vested interest in that. So, I guess the question could be taken both ways. Oh well.

Cheers!

24. Moi aussi-- For the majority it was 1 or 5. Only a couple were neither
The questions are pretty lame, however.

Some can be interpreted in a variety of ways.

15. 8 here, and I have the same question as Priyanka. How did you get such a HIGH score?
Seriously, after reading those questions, you either had to have answered a few of them the opposite of what they should have been, or you don't like homosexuals. I even went back and changed three of my answers to be the opposite, from Strongly Disgree to Strongly Agree, where the Strongly Disagree is for some outlandish hateful thing, and it only changed my score to a 14. How on EARTH did you get 36?!

20. You wonder why this was posted in here.
Considering the OP's, um, apathetic, shall we say, attitudes towards GLBT people.

Especially with the way he doesn't seem the slightest bit ashamed of his horrible score.

22. A 36 score is problematic, to say the least.
I hope the OP reflects on his attitudes. I mean, seriously, that's bad. And just cavalierly posting it without a "I need to do some rethinking about my attitudes towards gay and lesbian people" is especially bad.

16. WTF??? There's a few questions that can mean anything.
For example, sexual advances of any sort used make me extremely nervous. But I'm so comfortably married now that I'm safe to flirt with anyone. There's no worries it will go anywhere.

I "score" as "high-grade non-homophobic" whatever that means. It could be I'm so politically correct I "knew" the right answers, but the sad pathetic truth is I'm just flattered when anyone makes sexual advances towards me.

:woohoo: They think I'm HOT!

18. I agree.
The one about seeing a gay couple holding hands making you nervous (I don't remember the exact wording), but yeah, it makes me nervous because I fear for their safety and I know I gotta be ready to jump when it's time to jump. But I decided not to take it that way, because I don't think they meant it that way.

They got me on the gay joke question.

I'm enlightened, so to speak, but some of the knee-jerk juvenile stuff is dying hard.

I'm trying, though. And getting better all the time.

23. I got 13
But if I had been really honest, I am sometimes ambivalent about some gay people hitting on me even though I'm gay. I don't like everyone. I am not always comfortable with other people's expression of their sexuality. Sometimes I think people are too forward.

Many of the questions can be answered neutrally, the problem with most surveys is that they require black or white answers to issues which are frequently gray. Even the ones which try to ask similar questions with sliding scales, like this, miss the mark on far too many occasions.
As a statistician as part of my job, I abhor most questionnaires and very frequently see major holes in them.
