Fraternity Sues To Keep Out Gays (UNC)

(Chapel Hill, North Carolina) A conservative Christian fraternity is suing University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill over the school's gay inclusion policy. Alpha Iota Omega's status as an official campus group was revoked after it refused to sign the university's nondiscrimination policy.

<snip>

Alpha Iota Omega has only three members. But, they hired a lawyer and launched their lawsuit. The three members will not say who is paying the legal fees.

An attempt at mediation between the university and the students failed on Monday - setting the course for the case to go to trial.

The suit comes as students at the university demonstrated Tuesday evening to show support for a gay student who was taunted and beaten.

more info on similar suits in rest of article.

Bet we see more of the same in the next few weeks, it's open season by the wingnuts.

1. Kick it off campus and let the National pull its charter.
Just like when "No Jews or Blacks allowed" in fraternaties and sorieties in the past.

2. Only 3 members? HAHA!!!
It's sad, on one hand you have students protesting the beating of a gay student...and then you have these nut jobs trying to keep gays out of their hate-filled fraternity!

3. don't assume it won't happen
here at ohio state, we had a student organization (Christian Legal Society) sue the university to change the non discrimination policy to no longer include glbt people in reference to religious organizations. the university rolled over, rather than fight it. we in the ACLU, as well as HRC and the Outlaws (the glbt law school group) have been fighting it for about a year now, but so far nothing. schools are finding it easier and easier to discriminate against gays in exchange for not having legal fees

4. Now this is where
I would support tossing frivolous lawsuits out the door...Discrimination is discrimination & this homophobic lawsuit should be tossed!

5. Frivolous
bullshit lawsuits like that can easily be launched and won in this state yet I can't even get a lawyer to help me build a harrassment and discrimination case based on gender. If I could, it'd be my ticket out of here. Jerks like that can sue a college for having a policy that is NOT bigoted? I don't get it. I guess I never will understand people.

I'd love to see just who is paying the legal bills here.

Frankly, I wonder who contacted whom. There are highly organized, well financed conservative groups out there just LOOKING to bring cases like this. I'll bet anything they sought out this "fraternity" precisely to get this case rolling.

That's what they do, in a stealthy, sneaky, lying, phony-piety sort of way. That's their AGENDA.

8. actually the case is several months maybe years old
They are in the first round the fraternity won an injunction barring UNC from decertifying them until after the case is heard. So for now they are an official student group.
