My Thoughts on Religion and Prop 8 |
|
Some people might disagree with me but it seems as though prop 8 is not only an attack on gays and lesbians but it's also an attack on religion itself. I know, I know; you're probably wondering how the hell I arrived at that conclusion. But here's how I see it. A ban on gay marriage makes the assumption that homosexuals cannot be Christians. And yet there are. Thus to say they cannot get married goes against their religion as the bible preaches marriage between couples.
Some people might tell you that the bible explicitly prohibits homosexuality. Yet legally it should be the government's job to assume it knows nothing about the bible since the first amendment separates church from state. Therefore I think it might be a good idea for gay Christians to use this to challenge the courts. If it's part of "their" religion then they should be allowed to marry. I am not a Christian but I think it would be a good argument for those who are gay and believe in the bible. Just a thought anyways.

1. Well, it's certainly an attack on all fair-minded people. |

My liberal Christian friends loathed Prop. 8, and all voted against it, as did every Unitarian Universalist I know, every member of the United Church of Christ I know, etc., etc.

2. The original WMD is the Bible |
|
And it's the way the religious-right uses that book that makes it such a destructive weapon.
When people use religion or the Bible to attack other people they do hurt their own cause because it turns people off religion and expose their massive hypocrisy.
