Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has rejected a call to amend the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage, a move that has put him at odds with his brother the President.

While George W. Bush continues to call for a federal constitutional amendment to block gays and lesbians from marrying, his brother this week said that a state amendment is not needed in Florida.

Jeb Bush was commenting a call from Southern Baptists for the state to enshrine traditional marriage in its constitution. The denomination voted last week to support a gay marriage ban in the constitution. (story)

.. it's even true that not all members of the Bush family are alike.

Jeb is pretty good on the environment too, at least for a Republican.

Very regressive on economic issues, though.

Florida, especially Miami, has quite a gay crowd. There's enough clout, I should think, to make him think twice before pulling a dubya.

I'm sort of hoping he's serious. Lots of people don't want to have a gay marriage amendment passed because it will be messing with our constitution. Why wouldn't Jeb be an exception?

This would not be the first relative of W's to openly disagree with him on a political subject.

Can you imagine how it looks on W to have his own brother go against him on this subject?

Not that gays shouldn't continue to fight this amendment, but I really don't think it will pass. W might be a crazy nut, but that doesn't make everybody else who claims to be on his side one.

...in this thread regarding bloomberg; all they are trying to do is pick up the queer vote. So they will show some support, all the while realizing the FMA will pass next year. Once that happens they can turn around and say; "it isn't on their shoulders, that they did everything they could."
