Birth control pill attacked?) May Have Dangerous Side-Effect
Fox news presented this 12/6/05 NBC report as if birth control pills might be banned! :-(

But it appears to just be one more study to the FDA about side effects.

Study Finds Birth Control Pill May Have Dangerous Side-Effect

CHICAGO -- A new warning was issued this week about the potential side-effects of birth control pills.<snip>

For women on birth control ages 20 to 44, one in 2,000 will be hospitalized with the blood clots.

The risk is even higher for women who fly, according to research at John's Hopkins University.

"The risk for blood clots happens once the woman gets on the pill and is highest within the first year of being on the pill," said Stephan Moll, a doctor at the University of North Carolina Thrombosis Clinic. "But even after the clot risk continues, so women can clot even if they've been on the pill safely for four or five years."<snip>

Nothing new.

7. Yup
they're just stirring up trouble. It basically boils down to: if you're on the Pill, don't smoke.

10. Most women know about the risk
and sensible women know it's a whole lot less risky than a pregnancy every year, frequent abortions, or many of the other alternatives like IUDs, if they can still get one of those.

Life is full of calculated risks. This is just one of them, and in a world full of selfish men who refuse to wear condoms, it's one that most women have to bear. The risk can be cut by not smoking, by exercising (including getting up during a flight and walking back and forth to the lav even if you don't really have to wee), and by avoiding a totally sedentary lifestyle.

2. Bushco/Fundie propaganda
they want to eliminate birth control as immoral. Gee, ya wonder if the Bush twins are on the pill? You think they pay any attention to this crap.

After 40 years you think the fundies would give it a rest.

3. Blood Clots high in women who fly
Isn't that true in women who fly, and not on the pill.

People had better wake up , it hasn't been all that many years since birth control was limited in some instances. My doctor recommended me to have a ligation of tubes after my fourth child was born in 1957, in order to get the procedure done, two or three other doctors beside my attending, plus my husband had to sign on the dotted line.

4. It's true. Contraception was illegal in CT and other states
until the Supreme Court's decision shortly before Roe v Wade. If Roe goes down, so might the decisions guaranteeing access to contraceptives.

5. This is why women who get the pill see doctors on a regular basis
Idiots

I haven't been on the pill in over a decade but when I was I'd have to get an appointment with my doctor every 6 months to make sure I was ok. Well, I still have a prescription just in case I want to start taking them.

8. When I go
they always ask me about my contacts. Apparently dry eyes is a symptom of...something.
It just goes to show that everything has a side effect. Personally, I'd rather NOT get pregnant and have to deal with some dry eyeballs once in a while.

6. This is very, very old "news". This side effect was documented in the
late sixties when bc pills first went mainstream.
