Vaccine settlement no landmark, officials say

Government maintains Georgia girl's case no proof of autism link

ATLANTA - For those convinced that vaccines can cause autism, the sad case of a Georgia girl, daughter of a doctor and lawyer, seems like clear-cut evidence. The government has agreed to pay the girl’s family for injury caused by vaccines.

But it turns out it’s not that simple — and maybe not even a first.

The 9-year-old girl, Hannah Poling, had an underlying condition that may have been worsened, triggering her autism-like symptoms.

“This does not represent anything other than a very special situation,” said Dr. Julie Gerberding, head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

1. Sad thing is, anti-vaxers don't care.
Their whole crusade is built on emotional appeals and misinformation. "goverment...pays...injury...vaccine...autism" That's all they see, and all they need to know. The complete story doesn't support their arguments, so they can only distort.

3. since $$$ are involved
You can expect them to see dollar signs everywhere. That's an even more powerful argument than appeal to emotion.

2. more comforting news from the article
:sarcasm:

"There are no scientific studies documenting that childhood vaccinations cause or worsen mitochondrial diseases, but there is very little scientific research in this area,” said Chuck Mohan, executive director the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, a Pittsburgh-based group that raises money for research.

Whatcha want to bet they won't find it if they don't look?

5. Here's a newsflash:
the possible methods by which vaccines could affect a mitochondrial disease are the SAME methods that a REAL ILLNESS could do it. Fever, infection, etc. So in the absolute worst case, it's pick your poison: risk the condition (and death) from the disease, or face a miniscule risk of the condition from a vaccine.

I never cease to be amazed at the lack of understanding of risks and statistics from the anti-vax movement.

6. Here's another newsflash
Most people aren't infected with nine different viruses at the same time, with thimerosal added, as this kid was.

7. You're right. Usually it's much more.
Hundreds of viruses and bacteria we come into contact with every day. Plus the mercury that's in our atmosphere and everything we eat.

So a vaccine is a lousy comparison - its ingredients are virtually negligible compared to what we contact every day of our lives.

4. And you still believe these "officials"?
Here is what the NVIC said in 2000: http://www.nvic.org/PressReleases/pr42700autism.htm

"Hearings in the House Government Reform Committee last August and earlier this month included testimony from parents and physicians, who presented evidence that vaccines may be a co-factor in the development of autism in some children (www.house.gov/reform/hearings/index.htm). Meetings have taken place between agencies at the National Institutes of Health and parent groups in the past few months where both NVIC and ARI have asked for a public-private collaborative autism research effort that focuses on investigating the biological mechanisms of vaccine-associated brain and immune system dysfunction leading to autism. In a letter sent to the Secretary of DHHS today, both NVIC and ARI formally asked that non-government researchers at private research institutes, including those at M.I.N.D., be involved in any large government study of the incidence or biological causes of autism, including vaccine-associated brain and immune system dysfunction leading to autism."

Note the claim by so called "anti-vaxers" above? It was CORRECT.

You are witnessing damage control. While it's entirely possible the government/big pharma will continue to shit upon less educated parents who's children have suffered, I will not help them do it.
