Protective effect of fish oil on exercise-induced asthma
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=16424411&query_hl=3&itool=pubmed_docsum

On the normal and placebo diet, subjects exhibited EIB. However, the fish oil diet improved pulmonary function to below the diagnostic EIB threshold, with a concurrent reduction in bronchodilator use. Induced sputum differential cell count percentage and concentrations of LTC4-LTE4, PGD2, IL-1beta, and TNF-alpha were significantly reduced before and following exercise on the fish oil diet compared to the normal and placebo diets. There was a significant reduction in LTB4 and a significant increase in LTB5 generation from activated PMNLs on the fish oil diet compared to the normal and placebo diets. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that fish oil supplementation may represent a potentially beneficial nonpharmacologic intervention for asthmatic subjects with EIB.

1. Just caught this on the "Latest" page... I have asthma.
So thanks so much for posting this. I have other health conditions that are better with fish oil, but I can't seem to make myself take those tablets every day. Now I have another reason to try!

3. I have asthma too and I was taking the kind that smelled, but
recently I got the enteric kind that digests lower in the tract. I haven't had asthma this winter which is almost unheard of. So maybe it's helping me, too in that area. I am also taking it for other conditions.

6. My mother used to give me my daily dose of cod liver oil
whenever I needed punishment for something or other. I retaliated by developing a taste for the stuff and would ask to lick the spoon. It really pissed her off.

Even now, those fish oil burps remind me of my childhood.

4. Very nice! I did some of the original NIH research re:
Fish oils and serum lipid levels in the early 80s.

Best to take it in the liquid form (Barlean's organinic 1 Tbsp= 11g FO). Otherwise, to achieve significant benefit a large number of pills (very large in size) are required, ie, 10 pills/day.

It's very good mixed into plain yogurt. And, yogurt enhances the absorption of FO as well. Also, good on potatoes. But, the benefits of FO are easily destroyed by even very low heat and light.

Some significant side effects as well. Notably decreased clotting time (ie, increased bleeding).

5. Thanks. Worth a try. Can't do any harm.
Guess I should have bought that Bassomatic when SNL was selling them.
