Alzheimer's on a relentless upward trajectory
Another good argument for stem cell research. :(

Alzheimer's on a relentless upward trajectory

By Mary Brophy Marcus, USA TODAY

The number of people who have Alzheimer's disease is creeping insidiously higher year after year, adding increasing pressure on the health care system, experts say.

A report out today, the 2009 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures, indicates that an estimated 5.1 million Americans over 65 now have Alzheimer's.

Health care costs for them and for people who have other forms of dementia are more than three times higher than costs for older Americans who are not afflicted.

"We're really going to have to do a better job of dealing with Alzheimer's disease. We're going to have to find better treatments and preventions," says Bill Thies, chief medical and scientific officer of the Alzheimer's Association, which compiled the report. "But we're seeing the government reducing dollars for Alzheimer's disease. Clearly, that's an equation going in the wrong direction."

Every 70 seconds, someone in the USA develops Alzheimer's. The disease slowly erodes the brain and eventually the body and can drag out for years, placing financial burdens on families and the medical system, the report says.

The disease also can lead to serious emotional and physical stress on the caregivers of those afflicted with the disease, says William Klein, professor of neurobiology and physiology at Northwestern University's Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago.

1. Marijuana could prevent Alzheimer's
http://media.www.thelantern.com/media/storage/paper333/news/2009/01/27/Campus/Marijuana.Could.Prevent.Alzheimers-3598061.shtml

A puff a day might keep Alzheimer's away, according to marijuana research by professor Gary Wenk and associate professor Yannic Marchalant of the Ohio State Department of Psychology.

Wenk's studies show that a low dosage in the morning of a certain cannabinoid, a component in marijuana, reversed memory loss in older rats' brains. In his study, an experimental group of old rats received a dosage, and a control group of rats did not. The old rats that received the drugs performed better on memory tests, and the drug slowed and prevented brain cell death. However, marijuana had the reverse effect on young rats' brains, actually impairing mental ability.

Alzheimer's is a disease unique to humans and the memory loss in the rats was a natural decline, but rat brains are similar enough to human brains to serve as partial models for humans, Wenk said.

Research on marijuana as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease began because of the drug's success in slowing progression of multiple sclerosis and reducing patients' pain, Wenk said. Alzheimer's affects a similar part of the brain that MS does.

6. That's my question as well. I think this is an area ripe for further research
and a major breakthrough. I've seen suggestions that Alzheimer's is actually a prion disease.

8. Alzheimer's and Insulin Resistance
FYI: It has recently come to light that Alzheimer's appears to be in part caused by insulin resistance. The same insulin resistance that is the cause of Type 2 diabetes. Researchers have, in fact, begun to refer to Alzheimer's as Type 3 diabetes. Brain cells appear to be starving for insulin as we grown older, but are unable to use what is available. More insulin, a typical treatment for Type 2 diabetes, doesn't help. The insulin receptors appear to be functioning but have (in simple language) forgotten how to use the insulin. A possible culprit? Highly processed foods along with toxins in the water and the air we breathe. My group has been working to unravel the secrets for over five years.

Best to all.
