6. What evidence do you have that the Mexican victims of H1N1 all had darker skin?
Or is this an assumption you're making to support a personal theory?

16. Your question is a strawman. You learn nothing from the deletion? That you're out of line?

Since you put words in others' mouths, misread what they wrote and make heinous accusations, why would anyone want to answer your strawman question?

29. That sounds a bit off base to me
What do you mean by "darker skinned people need more sunshine". I'm a person of color and find that statement very offensive.

These days people get their vitamin D from food sources. There is no great need to get it from the sun.

While it is true that skin colors developed/evolved to deal with sunshine and getting the proper amount of vitamin D, I don't think those things hold very true today. Lots of cultures drink milk.

And too much sunlight and UV rays can be very dangerous to our bodies - even dark skinned people. We're not immune to cancer.

30. This is a scientific fact!
I cannot believe people are getting offended by this. There is nothing racial about it! It is biological.

I have BROWN EYES. I can take the sun much more readily than my blue eyed, blond son.
It certainly doesn't offend me that I tan rather than burn. :silly:

Dark-skinned people need up to six times as much sunlight as those with fair skin to produce the same levels of Vitamin D, says a new study.

Researchers at the Australian National University found that fair-skinned people need over four minutes in the summer sunshine to produce enough Vitamin D whereas dark-skinned people need more, reported online edition of Daily Mail. (...)

33. Ok!
Great link. But maybe if the original poster had referenced this study in his/her post, the issue would not have been raised. I certainly do not believe that this is "common knowledge". I don't stand outside to get sunshine to produce vitamin D. In fact I avoid the sun as most people do by wearing sunblock etc. I get my vitamin D from food sources.

I know I inherited pigment to deal with the sun more than fair skinned people. That wasn't the point though. The quote "darker skinned people need more sunshine so that probably evens out".

How the heck does that imply any kind of scientific evidence?

34. I don't know.
Misunderstandings happen, especially on the 'net. I know Celebration, and know she is not prejudiced in any way.

It happens to be common knowledge to me, but I read a LOT of health information.

So, I'm glad it could be sorted out. Thanks for speaking up!

35. You didn't "sort out" anything.
At issue is not that people with darker skin need more sunlight to generate the same amount of vitamin D that lighter-skinned people do. That is a known scientific fact and was never in dispute. Nor is it a racist observation to note it, nor did anyone say it was.

When you realize that, you will understand what the problem is.

It is a sad day for DU.

I've been fighting racism for 50 years and I lost a lot of battles in that fight. But I never thought I'd lose in DU.

26. It looks like the statement was not racist and attempts to color it so were unfounded.
The assumptions were very very extreme. One acknowledged it came from previous discussions on this.

Sometimes words stand as they are and won't support false assumptions being piled on.

No one said "all" or anything else that was accused here.

The accusations of racism are severe and damaging and should not be thrown around based on misreads and bad assumptions.

28. and that was not done here. I'm very sorry if you really think that it was. no one here supports
racism.

In that spirit, we also must be able to have open discussion and make statements that -- yes, possibly someone read it wrong and it sounded like something they'd heard someone else say and the tirade begins -- are not in themselves hurtful; statements that further the ACTUAL discussion.
