Healthy food aids the arteries
Interesting story on Good Morning America earlier today

http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=8199976

Apparently, some weeks earlier, the reporter and a test subject gorged on fat food and after two hours their blood really had fatty clouds.

Now they eat better - soy beans, grilled salmon - and their blood before and after was the same. In addition, the reporter's arteries - some kind of a scan - showed her arteries expanded, as if she just came back from a jog.

1. That is amazing
I am going to save that and watch it once a week to help me eat more fish.

5. I eat chinook salmon
and pacific albacore tuna. So thankful to live at the coast. But it even gets old sometimes.

8. I used to eat sardines, mainly for the oil
otherwise walleye. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with a "gone fishing" herb mix and dill weeds and bake in the oven. And while there, eat with coniferous veggies like Brussel sprouts.

11. What is interesting is that normally I don't watch GMA
but rather the what used to be more news oriented the Today Show. But when I opened it this morning they had Michele Malkin and I switched the channel as quickly as I could.

2. Healthy food aids the arteries? WTF?
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 05:12 PM by county worker
Why is this news? Healthy food aids all body parts.

Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes all help the body.

Big Mac's, fries and a coke don't help the body.

4. Did you watch the video?
The woman's arteries improved immediately after eating the salmon meal. The affects can be instantantaneous, which surprised even the scientists who did the testing.

6. Thank you! I have also passed it on to friends who need to know.
It is a good visual lesson and I will also watch it from time to time...when I reach for that rib eye.

Anything that comes from under the water, except white tuna packed in broth, and fish 'n chips with lots of ketchup and vinegar ... where the deep-frying and all kinda defeats the purpose. ;)

My dad died of a quadruple coronary artery blockage (never diagnosed, never symptomatic, cycling 10 miles a day at 73 up until the also undiagnosed, unsymptomatic metastasized melanoma cracked some bones). Just like his dad did, at 64. For his younger brother, it was a stroke at 45. The coroner who did the post mortem on my dad told us all to go start getting monitored pronto.

In chatting with my nurse practitioner yesterday, reviewing hypertension meds (I don't know whether "Metabolic Syndrome" / "Syndrome X" is real, but the hypertension, high LDL and low HDL certainly run in this apple-shaped family), I asked about the omega fatty acids. I'd tried to be good by buying the expensive omega-3 eggs. But then I read up on them and found I was spending my money on trace amounts, and I only eat 2 eggs a week anyway. I asked about cod liver oil. She said yes.

So for us non-fishy things eaters, there's a solution. It comes in capsules. I'm stocking up tomorrow.
