Gruesome cigarette warning labels are coming to the U.S.
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 03:11 AM by steven johnson
Will horrible pictures of smoking related disease on cigarette packages deter smoking? I guess we are going to find out.

Gruesome pictorial cigarette-package warnings will be coming to the U.S. relatively soon, according to a recent article in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The startlingly graphic labels -- which are already required in many countries around the world – typically feature photos of people ravaged by diseases caused from smoking, in an effort to discourage tobacco use.

How intense are they? Many depict rotting teeth. Huge tumors. Festering sores ...

Dramatic indeed, but are they enough to make people quit smoking? Apparently the Obama Administration is willing to try, as part of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act signed into law on June 22.

Gruesome cigarette warning labels are coming to the U.S.

6. Can we put similarly realistic images next to Republicans' names on ballots? You know, like pix of
those who suffer and die due to lack of health care. Homeless people. War casualties. Etc.

8. Well, it might work. But my first thought is that it's unbelievable, so I would disregard it.
It's just to inflame people and dissuade people from doing something. It's not a reality check at all. I'm 55 years old, I smoked for over 30 years and have known many many people who smoked that long or longer, NONE of whom got ANY of those things in the pics. So altho it MAY happen, and no doubt DOES happen, I think those things are rare and does not really reflect what REALLY happens to most people when they smoke.

What REALLY happens to most smokers is that their teeth are more yellow, their breath is bad, their skin is somewhat ashen (from lack of oxygen), they are more prone to colds and coughs (I wasn't, but I saw that that happened to # of other smokers), and in their later years they will probably get COPD or emphysema or something like that.

If they're going to put pics like these on ciggie packs (I don't know how they'd fit, unless the pics are so small you can't see them), then I think they should also put similar pics on, say, butter tubs (showing clogged arteries and obese people), and packs of sugar and candy and cookies (showing obese people, clogged arteries, people dead from heart attacks caused by high triglycerides, and diabetics giving themselves insulun shots for the rest of their lives, etc.), and tins of salt (pics of people who died from high blood pressure). Those things are more likely to result when you ingest those items than you are to get lung cancer from smoking.

9. I can't believe
the cigarette industry would go along with this. They didn't back-door sponsor the new bill to tarnish their image.
