Masculinity Challenged, Men Prefer War and SUVs

Men whose masculinity is challenged become more inclined to support war or buy an SUV, a new study finds.

Their attitudes against gays change, too.

Cornell University researcher Robb Willer used a survey to sample undergraduates. Participants were randomly assigned feedback that indicated their responses were either masculine of feminine.

The women had no discernable reaction to either type of feedback in a follow-up survey.

But the guys's reactions were "strongly affected," Willer said today.

"I found that if you made men more insecure about their masculinity, they displayed more homophobic attitudes, tended to support the Iraq war more and would be more willing to purchase an SUV over another type of vehicle," said Willer said. "There were no increases for other types of cars."

Those who had their masculinity threatened also said they felt more ashamed, guilty, upset and hostile than those whose masculinity was confirmed, he said.

1. OK, I guess we have to stop...

...insulting freepers' manhood, as their fragile minds can't take it.

2. like we needed a study to tell us this one
If men knew how tiny they look in those big trucks they wouldn't be so anxious to drive them. Uhoh, I hope I didn't just threaten anyone's masculinity. And another truck is sold. ;)

4. yes, but what came first
the freeper or the lack of cojones?

Anthropology 101, it's a human form of beating one's chest; arching and spitting, displaying one's desirability as a mate.

Of course questioning some neanderthal's masculinity is going to cause them to go overboard trying to prove they are still desirable genetic material. Sexual mating displays waste huge amounts of resources just like SUV's, and competition for the most desirable females means that males have to be territorial, sexually aggressive, and capable of manipulating many more resources than the mean.

Growing bigger gonads to impress some of the ladies (and some guys) isn't always a good thing though if you end up tripping over them while running for your life from an even bigger predator. I think PopSci or SciAm had a recent article to that effect about a fish with that problem.

poor freepers, can't win for losing.

8. suspicions confirmed
A friend of mine says when she sees guys driving their giant borgemobiles, she thinks "Gee, I'm sorry your dick fell off!" I always figure the plumbing and/or self-image is inversely proportional to the size of the vehicle.
