Scientists Find 1.8-million-year-old Homo Erectus Skull

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) -- Archaeologists in the former Soviet republic of Georgia have unearthed a skull they say is 1.8 million years old and part of a find that holds that oldest traces of humankind's closest ancestors ever found in Europe.

The Homo erectus skull was found earlier this month about 100 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tbilisi, in the same area where a jawbone believed to be the same age was found in 1991, Georgian National Museum director David Lotkipanidze, who took part in the dig, said by telephone.

"Practically all the remains have been found in one place. This indicates that we have found a place of settlement of primitive people,'' he said of the spot, where archaeologists have been working since 1939.

The findings in Georgia, which researchers said were a million years older than any widely accepted pre-human remains in Europe, have provided additional evidence that Homo erectus left Africa a half-million years or more earlier than scientists had previously thought.

Who was saying "humans evolved in Africa" as if humans only evolved in Africa?

This evidence just pushes back the beginning of the timeline of when Home Erectus lived in Europe. ( by a lot)

13. Perhaps you were joking...

...but it's generally accepted now that H. erectus got out of Africa, spreading into Asia, etc. H. sapiens still seems to have evolved from erectus in Africa, and left much later on.

I guess that means waiting for the results of the testing that is in progress that will give an ever more certain age to the human skull. edit: that human skull.

that humans walked out of africa for parts unknown a lot earlier than we previously thought. Or that other human species developed in different areas simultaneously.

I wonder what effect, if any, this information would have on The Genographic Project. This project is trying to trace human migration using the genetic markers in all of us.

We didn't evolve from a prior form of human in every country. In our current human form, we emigrated out of Africa and became the dominant life form over a period of thousands of years.
