Finally! First NASA satellite photo's of the Gulf coast Flood areas!
Now for any of you who have become spoiled using "Google Earth," these are MODIS Satellite Photos, the M in MODIS stands for Moderate Resolution, but this type of satellite is best for looking at Fires, Flooding, dust storms etc.

These are "false color" images and I'm including a before Photo below because if you just look at the "after" photo, you probably would see much, but if you compare the "before" to the "after" side by side, you will see the DARK areas around the rivers and especially around Lake Ponchartrain, the Dark areas are the flood waters.

Hopefully we will get a better real color photo tomorrow.

After Storm (Flooding):
Date: 2005/242 - 08/30
16 :45 UTC
Floods along the Gulf Coast
Satellite: Terra

Before Storm Flooding (note: you have to scroll down to bottom picture on the linked page)

Date: 2005/239 - 08/27
19 :25 UTC
The Gulf Coast (before flooding)
Satellite: Aqua

If you have a slow connection, or can figure out how to open more that one window at the same time and can then resize them, look for this logo to open two viewers at once for easy comparison:

3. Update: New Satellite Photo from today's pass shows areas...
...hidden in yesterday's photo.

Date: 2005/243 - 08/31
19 :00 UTC
Floods along the Gulf Coast
(false color)
Satellite: Aqua

Plus a fairly good "Real Color" image that shows some very bad stuff in the Water, might be a big "Light Oil" slick.

NOTE: this is a "RAW" Image, meaning, it hasn't been run thru the computer program that removes banding and distortion. Luckily, this one has little of that in the area of interest.

If I find anything better I'll post it here.

So where did you end up evacuating to? Good to see you made it out safe.

Thanks a lot for your concern... gawd knows we need people like you. I wish I hadn't left my Tom Petty CD in New Orleans... now I truly know what it is to be a "Refugee."

9. Thanks! I've been hoping that they would put up a free picture!
Your link doesn't work though, the problem is DU and some other web sites have limits on how large a file can be linked to.

Here's some new links to the site, you'll see it:

NOTE: They also have a 2 Free Images of Biloxi, Mississippi too!

12. Wow, someone at NASA was very busy compiling all that into one page
This might sound crazy but, it looks like we got lucky with this one. If Katrina had tracked 50-100 miles further West, then N.E., it could have hit as a Cat. 5 by hitting that very warm water south of Morgan City.

15. Flooding Update: Satellite Photo shows a Huge part of Plaquemines

and most of St. Bernard Parishes still under water. I'm beginning to wonder if they are permanently lost to the Gulf.

If you look at the September 8, 2005 Satellite, (in the Bands 7-2-1, 500m Photo) look at the Eastern side of the Mississippi River, where it makes the 180 degree turn and then heads due South.

All of that Black on the East side of the Mississippi River is Flood waters.

Click Thumbnail, then click Bands 7-2-1 500m view

Click the thumbnail below to goto earlier Gulf Coast Photos for comparison. The Pre-Katrina photo is at the bottom of the linked page:

For the photo from today (but with a few areas covered with clouds) is below:
