Sending a signal to the past
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 08:52 AM by YankeyMCC
Going for a blast into the real past
If the experiment works, a signal could be received before it's sent

(snip)
For the first phase of the experiment, to be started early next year , they will look for evidence of signaling between the entangled photons. Finding that would, by itself, represent a stunning achievement. Ultimately, the UW scientists hope to test for retrocausality -- evidence of a signal sent between photons backward in time.

Early next year? Hmm...earlier than they think maybe ;)

This is huge, can we send a warning message back to Nader voters in 2000? (Just a little friendly teasing I'm not one to blame the Nader vote for shrub getting into the white house.)

On Edit: Ok, it's early and I only have had one cup of coffee. It took me awhile to get the joke below and now I've fixed the typo. :)

6. Yup. Quantum Mechanics is bizarre, beyond normal experience, so

it can sound like quack science to the layperson.

:silly:

4. How about we start a Quantum-SETI Program?
My idea is to capture photons and other cosmic ray particles and "listen" to them to see if they are quantum-entangled with alien signaling devices.

In other words: Imagine if E.T. were sending quantum-entangled particles as "messages in a bottle" and using them to find other planets to communicate with.

Actually, it's better than a "message in a bottle." It would be like sending out walkie-talkies through the cosmos.

I know it's an EXTREME long-shot.

I'm just thinking outside the box.

5. That would just create a new alternate time-line and have no actual effect on OUR universe.

And even if it did change our universe, that would mean we'd all have to join the LIEberman '08 Campaign! UGH!

7. I disagree. The technology to *recieve* the signals doesn't exist
yet. The ability to communicate backwards through time would require this to exist. Once it is invented we should be able to receive messages from the future (obviously assuming the theory is correct and the experiment works). Once this happens we should be able to create alternate time-lines (and thus alternate universes) at will.

I thought of the SETI thing as well, if this is viable and it works, this would mean that there actually could be meaningful contact between civilizations anywhere within our universe (obviously with all of the given barriers we have now of understanding, variations in signaling technology etc). Quantum messaging due to particle entanglement though would eliminate the lag-time inherent in light-speed constricted communications.

Very exciting stuff.
