Birdflu pandemic may mean some stay home to die

New Zealand medical authorities may tell some people likely to die from a birdflu pandemic to stay home and not clog up hospitals.

Research published today in the latest New Zealand Medical Journal predicts up to 3700 deaths in New Zealand from a first wave of pandemic influenza and up to a million people infected.

"It is likely that some difficult decisions will be required in limiting hospital care to those where it would most likely affect final health outcomes," the researchers said.

However, that death toll could be as high as 6210 people dead from 20,806 cases of serious illness.

1. There is a Monty Python skit in this
I just know there is

Sadly, many will die at home in the US because they cannot get health care in any timely manner. That plastic sheeting and duct tape will come in handy yet.

3. That's a real concern
Among counterterrorism and public health officials. Right now, hospital ERs are functioning as the alert system for bioterrorism -- mainly looking for spikes in admittances. Now, most people without health insurance, illegal immigrants who are fearful of government institutions, etc., don't go to a doctor until they absolutely have to. With a slow-acting pathogen, this might mean several days where an infected person is out in the world trying to function. By which point, they could have spread a disease to untold numbers: on public transportation, in the restaurants where they cook and serve, the day care facilities where they care for other people's children, the office buildings they clean, the stores where they stock the shelves or ring you up at the register.

8. Ohio has California H3N2 - So Does Hong Kong
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 02:31 PM by pandemic_1918
The California version of H3N2 has run across the US and killed many students (they start with the flu that then allows bacterial meningitis to take off and they are dead in a day or two - some survive, but many die).

The California strain is also in Bangkok on Hong Kong. If it recombines with H5N1, the pandemic can get very bad very quickly
