Bags of Dead Dogs Discovered in Virginia
Just on the 11 o'clock news

A construction worker checking a remote Virginia road found carcasses and body parts of about 150 dogs, sheriff's officials said Thursday.

"When we got to the scene, you just could not believe the smell, and the amount of dogs down there was just unbelievable," sheriff's investigator Chris Holder said. "I've never seen anything like it. It looks like a deliberate dumping."

1. Jesus H Chris! What the fuck is wrong with people?
That's a pretty redneck part of Virginia, but even still, that's messed up.

I'll check the local media to see if there are anymore details, but I doubt it.

3. Any animal labs in the area?
The vet school at Tech isn't too far up the road from that area either.

I worked for a vet and volunteered at a shelter, the city/county was responsible for those "pick-ups" unless the owner made other arrangements for burial or cremation. The city uses an incinerator for mass creamation, I don't think it's legal to dump them in a landfill?

I wonder if they stumbled on a bunching operation? Those pets may be stolen? How much sadder can this get?

4. I did a Yahoo Map search
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 12:13 PM by Catchawave
Hope this link works as it shows the area's next to I-81, a pretty major north-south route in Western Va.

Edit: Zoom out to see the interstate.

5. That's the weird thing about that particular area.
Those animals could've come from VA, North Carolina, Tennessee...

I definitely don't think this was some stupid kids or something. This has to be lab- or shelter-related.

6. Judging by the randomness of breeds and sizes
I'd guess shelter or buncher.

A lab isn't likely to have such a wide array of breeds/sizes, with tags and toys, I don't think. Plus, they like to work with easygoing breeds, like greyhounds, beagles, etc. No "scientist" is going to want to put a rottweiler through TOO much...if he/she is smart.

7. Another possibility is a company setting themselves up as a
pet disposal service offering cremation/burial and then just dumping the carcasses illegally. Something like this happened on L.I. years ago.

9. UPDATE:
Dead animals that were dumped have possibly been traced back to a Knoxville crematory...

10. Wow
<This was not the first time Ross Ann Services has come under scrutiny. In March of this year, the facility was cited for unsanitary conditions, including thousands of maggots found in their parking lot.>

:puke:

Man, is this gross and sad.

11. Disgusting.
At least it just sounds like someone too lazy to properly dispose of the bodies, as opposed to what I suspected, which was a lab or something.
