Boycott Iams for animal cruelty
Here's my letter to the president of Iams, after reading PETA's expose at http://www.iamscruelty.com/

To: Jefferey P. Ansell
President, Iams Pet Food
(and Eukanuba, subsidiary)

Dear Mr. Ansell,

I am a dog owner who works with local animal rescue organizations in the Washington DC area, and I am writing to tell you how horrified I was to hear about the myriad abuses of animals that Iams/Eukanuba is funding.

- The cruel and inhumane experimentation done on animals by Larry Larry Arlian at Wright State University, http://www.iamscruelty.com/iams-feat-wsu.asp

- other experiments where you violated research protocol and caused the needless suffering and death of dogs and cats: http://www.iamscruelty.com/iams-feat-catsdie.asp, http://www.iamscruelty.com/iams-feat-dental.asp

I was also sickened to learn of Eukanuba's continued official sponsorship of Team Norway in the Iditarod. I am shocked that the veterinary branch of your company would support this event, notwithstanding the actions of the Team Norway leader:

"Focused on winning the race, Backen pushed his dogs beyond the point of exhaustion, so much so that Takk, Backen’s lead dog, “just sat down and died” a mile out of the checkpoint, according to race marshal Mark Nordman. Al Townshend, head veterinarian at the Unalakleet checkpoint, said, “Sudden death can occur in dogs for a number of reasons … including accidental trauma, ulcer or a dog inhaling own vomit.”

I cannot in good conscience support your company by buying Eukanuba or Iams products until you stop enabling this inexcusable mistreatment of the animals that are the very reason for your business.

I will also be sharing this information with animal shelters, animal rescue groups and other pet owners that I know, and encouraging them to join the boycott and spread the word.

I hope that you will consider what I've written, if not from a humane perspective, then from a bottom line profit perspective. Either way, you need to change your company's actions towards these creatures.

Respectfully,

2. In addition to this, you should know
IAMS/Eukanuba is a Proctor and Gamble company (I boycott everything of theirs already, due to their ongoing animal testing).

As for dog food, MANY of the big names do some form of animal testing. Some is home testing, but much of it is in labs, with ugly incidents and outcomes. Purina, for one, has it's own lab and USDA permit.

Hill's Science Diet is another notorious maker of dog food that performs various cruel experiments on companion animals.

Just boycott anything they are affiliated with and you'll be okay.

I've got to do some checking on Meow Mix though. I've raised so many cats on that stuff, but I think mine will get over it if I have to switch.

on edit: totally unrelated, but interesting link nonetheless: http://www.all-creatures.org/aip/nl-20040924-meow.html
