Kass The Ass does it again...
One more reason to not buy the Chicago Tribune:

The last thing you want to think about when putting a spoonful of baby peas in your mouth is all the screaming they did when they were killed.

Reportedly, German scientists have recorded tiny screams from terrified plant life.

As a former butcher threatened by vegetarians as a child, I figure there is a benefit to the screams of innocent vegetables. The vegetables shrieking in agony must make those socially superior vegans sick to their stomachs.

You know the kind of vegan I'm talking about, the kind who wrinkle their noses when you order a tasty veal chop. They guilt you, ruin your meal, while munching happily on celery.

Oh, you self-righteous hypocrites. That celery felt every bite.

1. This article screams of repressed guilt.
Finding any justification to eat animals. I bet this Kass person battles daily with their "inner demons."

3. Actually, "being eaten" is exactly what many fruits and vegetables desire.
It's another way their seeds are guaranteed to be planted far and wide.

4. The perfect response
I've used the talking points in this article many times to explain why plants can't possibly "feel" pain:

Will be dropping this columnist a little notey poo  Hope ya'll do the same <wink>

5. Have at him, but...
He finally told me to stop emailing him (the subject was Iraq; he was a supporter of the invasion). He really is a very small-minded person, and not very bright.

Good luck though...

6. Logical fallacy in the argument from "plant pain"
The reasoning in this argument seems to be, "We must eat something; plants may also feel (though we aren't certain), therefore we should eat animals because, one way or another we will be causing pain."

This argument is fallacious--just because one must occasionally cause some pain out of necessity does not excuse the causing of *all* pain out of desire. Taken to its extreme, it would mean that it's okay to eat humans, because we already cause pain by eating plants and animals.

So, even if one were to accept as a condition of debate the idea that plant responses represented an ability to feel pain*, the argument that "plant pain" makes meat-eating OK would still be flawed.

Tucker

*Of course, pain requires nerves of some sort to exist, and plants don't have nerves, but whatever.
