What's the weirdest thing you've ever been served?
Sure, most of us have probably had the experience of being handed a plate full of fish ("What? It's not meat!") or of eating a bowl of allegedly veg*n soup, only to find out the hard way (argh) that it was certainly not.

But I'm talking weird here, the kind of thing that made you look down at your plate and think, "well, clearly, someone is simply not up to the task."

Here's one: I was living in midstate NY in the 80's. (Anyone else remember being veg in the 80's?:eyes: ) I was a school function--yep, a picnic. Hot dogs, burgers, macaroni salad. And for me?

Corn on a bun.

Canned, loose corn. On a hoagie roll.

Damn, dude. That is just not right.

Anyone else got one?

1. I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
I may be committed, and I may be driven, but I am NOTHING compared to those that were veg in times prior to the 90's. It's easy now, but then...oh, man.

Hey, tofunut, was that a "kernal corn dog" or something?

3. Never thought about the "corn dog" connection.
Maybe it was someone's idea of a joke!

4. I hear that.
I can't imagine what it was like. Yet one more thing that groups like PETA have done to make our lives better.

2. I was at a confernce and was served whitefish which they insisted was
the vegetarian option.

I also recall getting a carrot sandwich on one of the airlines.

Carrot sandwich!

Oh, yes, that's good. *snif* I needed that.

edit: your airline reference reminded me of a strange meal I was given on a flight once. It was an unseasoned hot dish of barley, carrot threads and pineapple! Yee-arg!

11. wow... a carrot sandwich!?
I don't think I can top that...LOL

I can't recall ever getting 'odd' vegetarian selections, although at a work-related seminar thingy the 'vegetarian' sandwich selection was a plain, tasteless white bun, with lettuce and onions. And that's all.

14. I've had the lettuce sandwich, too!
And it was at a work function as well. People had no idea what kind of sandwich to get me for this work meeting, so they ordered me up some lettuce on a bun.
Mmmmm, mmmmm... good!

12. I got the carrot sandwich too!
Grated raw carrot in half a pita. Not the most appetizing dish, lol.

7. No, never heard of them
They sound good (better than a carrot sandwich, for example.)

Are they a Brazilian thing?

Very common in Brasil. Smoothies are called "vitaminas" ie Avocado .
which is comprised of same ingredients as smoothies. Either Juice or milk for the "smoothie" process, w/ additional items of your choice.
Avocado w / sugar is a dessert item also.

8. I don't remember being served anything weird.
I guess I'm not social enough. I've certainly eaten things I never wanted to eat again, though.

We had a good natural foods store back in the 80's. Mostly I remember trying every kind of grain and bean under the sun. I had a whole grains cookbook and tried different things with quinoa, millet, couscous and every kind of whole grain flour for making bread.

The only soy milk I remember back then was in foil pouches with the straw to stick in. The Chocolate Mint was to die for. And I had never even been that fond of chocolate and mint together. I haven't seen that drink in years and years, and sometimes I still miss it.

The first time I ever tried gardenburgers was when I was house sitting for my cousin and she had some in the freezer. She used to be a vegetarian until she had kids, then that kind of fell apart. Anyway, I think that must have been the early 90's. I loooved them. I believe I ate two boxes, and then had to buy more to replace them...not to be rude, I didn't want to leave her freezer gardenburgerless. :)

13. Nothing really weird but
people always assume that the perfect vegetarian food that I can eat is Jello. :puke: I have been a vegetarian since the 1960s and at that time often Jello WAS the only thing I could find to eat. x(

16. Yes!!
I hear the Jello thing. But being vegan, I have to turn it down constantly.

When I was in the hospital recently, they noted a vegan diet on my chart. Then they serve me Jello, :eyes: and when I ate everything but that, they noted that I was not eating. You'd think doctors would know better, but I remember one of them asking me when I mentioned my diet, "Well how do you get protein?" Sigh.....

17. You were in the hospital recently?
I hope it was nothing too serious.

You don't have to explain if you'd rather not. I just thought I'd ask. :)
