I got a bitter melon at the farmers' market. |
|
It looks like a giant pale green bumpy zucchini.
What the heck am I supposed to do with it? (I make a point of buying something I don't recognize if I can...but the farmer didn't speak a lot of English and couldn't help.)

1. Treat it like a big squash |
|
It's a vegetable (according to Chinese cooks), and I've had it cut up, seeded, sprinkled with salt and rinsed - like eggplant - and then stir-fried with seasonings.
I can only tell you one thing about bitter melon: you'll never buy one again. It's rather plain, not terribly flavorful or interesting, and more trouble than it's worth. But, at least you know what it is now, so good for you.

. I recalled reading an article in the Boston Globe, Food Section, about bitter melon a few weeks back: http://www.boston.com/ae/food/articles/2005/07/20/bitter_melon_enlists_a_neighborhood/Life is to laugh. Here, bitter melon has its own .org website: http://bittermelon.org/
