So, how many extraneous appliances do you have in your kitchen?
I realized this in the ricer/food mill thread...I have a lot of appliances and gadgets. Most, I actually use, but some just sit there. (Note I don't get rid of them...)

Roughly classified, my appliances/gadgets are as follows (omitting obvious things like can openers and measuring cups and knives):

Use often:
1. Kitchenaid mixer (except the dough hook -- I knead by hand)
2. Cuisinart stick blender
3. Toaster
4. Mini-chopper
5. Probe thermometer (which probably should be replaced soon, as the electronics are failing)
6. Coffee maker
7. Burr grinder
8. Microwave oven

Use occasionally:
1. Bar blender
2. Ancient food processor
3. Ancient waffle iron/griddle
4. Mandoline slicer
5. Ricer
6. Food mill

Use seldom, but the function can't really be duplicated by something else so I keep them:
1. Candy thermometer

Just sit there:
1. The grinder and shredder attachments for the Kitchenaid (my attachment port on the mixer is off-kilter and needs to be fixed, but I'm not sure I'd use it anyway)
2. Cookie press
3. The other coffee grinder (what do you call the kind with the blade?)
4. Garlic press
5. Espresso maker (I got it for my wedding. It's still in the box. I married seven years ago. I divorced this year. It's still in the box.)
6. Fondue pot
7. French press

Yikes.

1. None
I need everything, I use everything, and IF YOU TOUCH ANY OF IT, I'LL DIE!

A big favorite, seriously, is the Cuisinart Steamer. I don't think I could live without it. Makes perfect rice, great fish, steamed chicken breasts (boneless, skinless).

And the Cuisinart coffee/grinder combination.

It got the {wtf?} designation in my response. I've owned it for three or four years, maybe used it three or four times. To each their own.... :hi:

but here goes. (Note, I don't divide between use, I won't get rid of any of it)

Kitchenaid Mixer
immersible blender
toaster
toaster oven
probe thermometer
coffee maker
two grinders -one for spices, one for coffee
microwave
Cuisinart food processor w/a brazilian attachments, including all the ones for pasta
pasta roller
two waffle irons-one for Belgian waffles, one for regular
food mill
candy thermometer
deep fat thermometer
garlic press
fondue pot
mortar & pestle
bamboo steamer
herb shredder
mini mandolin
deep fat fryer
steamer
& dozens of other stuff that clutter up the drawers

My personal favorite: I have one of those double baskets so some year when I get up to it I can make potato nests.

edited to add other stuff

11. forgot to add my
most extraneous appliance. I have double wall ovens & I'll bet the lower oven gets used maybe a half a dozen times a year. DH will get it out of my cold, dead hands.

3. how can you not use that french press....
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 09:59 PM by mike_c
Best way to make coffee on the planet.

Use often:
1. coffee grinder (daily) and drip coffee maker
2. blender (soups, sauces, smoothies, mainly)
3. toaster oven
4. microwave oven

Use occasionally:
1. Kitchen aid mixer
2. meat thermometer

Use rarely:
1. rice cooker
2. electric steamer (I mean, wtf?)
3. mini-processor (I have KNIVES, for christ's sake)

That's about it for appliances. After that it's just knives and cutting boards, pots and pans.

Main item on my wish list is a coffee roaster.

on edit-- I haven't owned a full sized food processor since the ex left, and I don't miss it.

double edit: I pound my spices in a mortar-- that gets used three or four time a week, typically.

12. i drink LOTS of ice tea, but got a great 1.5 gallon Rubbermaid pitcher
at the thrift store the other day, so I use my regular BIG teapot to make double strength tea, then pour it into the big pitcher that i put ice and water into

that way I don't have to mess with paper filters etc, I get more tea per brewing that I can make SUPER strong

I have a strainer that fits the Rubbermaid perfectly so I can just scoop loose tea into the pot

and since I'm in the biz, I get loose tea by the pound from my coffee/tea supplier. it works great for me in my somewhat different circumstances

it's pretty much retired the old 1.5 quart Mr.Icetea that never seemed like enough product for the trouble and I got to reclaim the counter space :)

13. Ahhhh, good idea.
I have a brazilian teapots. I will check to see if I have one that is big enough to suit. I buy loose tea bulk from the local tea seller.

Will the pitcher melt when you pour the hot tea in? Or does the cold water already in the pitcher stop that from happening?

15. i put ice and water in the rubber first and since I"m making strong
tea, it actually cools off a bit while steeping

I have one of these that fits the rubbermaid that makes the pouring a snap to filter out the tea

...but there's nothing else that'll duplicate its function (that I'm willing to deal with, anyhow).

8. I use everything!
I have such a small kitchen that space is at a premium and I can only store things I know I will use. That's why every month I sit and sigh while looking at the Baker's Catalog knowing that I can't have all that I want. At least I save tons of money this way!

10. I go through phases with appliances.
I use it all the time for a while, get bored, move on, then get back to it later. So I never get rid of anything. Also, I have a lot of storage, so I don't feel stressed about cabinet space.

stuff I use a lot:
burr grinder
french press
toaster oven
microwave
rice steamer
bread machine
stick blender
probe thermometer
micro-plane graters

sometimes:
KA mixer
food processor
crock pot
ice tea maker
ice cream maker
pressure cooker

rarely:
juicer (someone gave it to me. I bust it out on a bi-yearly basis)
clay pot for baking (someone gave it to me)
regular blender (but when you need it, you need it)

14. Many of mine are inherited
We have and use the microwave, hand mixer, toaster, and coffee maker almost daily.
Hubby had an ice cream maker but I do not know where it is.
We have a blender that barely works, which i rarely use.
My dad, when he lived here, left me a mini-food dicer - I use it to finely chop peppers, onions, celery, and other veggies for things like meatloaf, tuna salad, etc.

I've been busy trying to get the pots and pans and hand utensils I need, and rarely buy new appliances, except we end up getting a new coffee maker every year or two. We drink 2 pots a day here so we really are hard on them.

I'd like to get a wok, but for now the cast iron frying pans work.

17. I can't answer this thread cuz it would violate my 12-step program
My name is Stinky the Clown and I am a kitchen appliance fetishist.

I have many and I use them all. Some, admittedly, more than others. I deal with them the same way I do cookbooks. If I get one thing from it, it was worth the price.

In other cases, I get a yen, buy a cheap one, then keep tradsing up to what I want. Had I bought what I want the first go-round, I'd gave saved money. As an example, I am on my eighth and ninth espresso makers, numbers one through seven having been cheapo buzz boxes. In aggregate, the buzz boxes cast more than the two Saecos I now have.

My sons love me for this appliance fetish. They get my cast-offs.

My wife hates me for this appliance fetish. She gets to put up with me.

19. I've repaired both of mine several times ... not that hard
I have replaced the boiler and the pump on the Vienna DeLuxe. I now have to replace the boiler on The Magic Comfort (which I think is the same as yours). I put a new steam valve in the Magic and now need to replace the boiler.

There's a guy in suburban Philadelphia who will do the repair (takes weeks and $$$) or will sell you the parts and talk you through the fix (couple days for the part and $ for the fix).

The fact is, any espresso maker needs a lot of TLC to keep running and parts replacement is not unusal. Par for the course. Commercial units (as you know) are even more needy than home units!

kitchen section. I have a fair sized kitchen with lots of cabinets and a small pantry. Also a walk-in closet under the eaves and that is full of things I use occasionaly. I simply can not let go of ANY kitchen items. Who knows, I might need it next year! Looking at other peoples lists reminded me of some things that are under the eaves. But it has taken many years to collect all of this. I also collect cookbooks, but that is another story.
