I've missed reading this forum a lot. |
|
I have been busy as heck working 60 + hours a week, meetings, deer hunting, etc. I have a lot of catch up reading to do Thursday. I missed all my old cooking conniseur friends. I'll be making a small turkey here for me. Well a 14pounder was the smallest one in the freezer at HEB. Mrs bearfan is going to visit her mother.

1. Your Bears are doing well this year too, I'm glad for you |
|
thats all I'm gonna say 'bout that ;)
I see over in the outdoors group that you are trying out the muzzleloader, how's that going? is there a special season for that in TX?
The reason I ask is my good friend in Wis has just gotten a muzzleloader this year too. The season runs from the end of the regular gun season for another week. I am thinking of getting one myself

2. It puts out a lot of smoke. |
|
It is accurate up to about 90 or 100 yards. My shots are usually less than that. There isn't a special muzzleloader season here, but for three weeks in January there is an extended season in the County I hunt in(Menard) for does and spikes only. They have real bad overpopulation there. They want everybody to take 5. Nature's way of starving them is cruel. Besides I have 3 feeders going year round so I don't feel bad about taking 5.

I picked up an 11 pound turkey today. It's a Red Bird - that's a local organic poultry company. Although I make a few turkeys a year, I can hardly wait to be pulling this one out of the oven. They have some good sales on the birds at the super market. $5.00 each. I think I'm going to get one and stick it in the freezer. That's the only hunting I do - hunting for sales! :D

5. Who has red birds on sale? |
|
Those are the only turkeys we like, and KS up here had them rather high.
We used our cards to buy turkeys for the food bank, though. That's what they were asking for, so that's what we did.

I got mine from Edward's Market on 44th. He's near that summer green grocer we were talking about a while back. It's near 44th and Ward Road. I splurged.
We used to get our turkeys from a guy I worked with. He had a ranch near Fort Morgan and raised organic turkeys and also buffalo. They were fabulous. It's been several years since I've heard form him. One of these days I'm going to call the slaughter place that processed his turkeys for him. It's near Fort M. If Mike still has his ranch, they'll know.

The dh always wanted an entire turkey for the two of us. I'd slice off two pieces from the breast and then have to cram the rest into the fridge.
Today, I'm barbecuing ribs. Yum.
