hey guys I bought a rice cooker at a garage sale--HELP

hey guys I bought a rice cooker at a garage sale--HELP
can I use it for Brown Rice? without soaking? it's one of these and it does say it will work with brown rice. can anybody tell me about it? i've never had a rice cooker but I couldn't pass it up for $2

1. I use a similar one for brown rice all the time
Same maker, cheaper model. I just let the rice steam bor 5 minutes or so after the pot clicks off.

You can eat it as soon as the pot clicks off, but it's a bit on the chewy side.

3. I used all kinds of rice in my cooker.
Brown, white, basmati, mixed, and even wild rice (which isn't really rice, but that's for another thread).

Don't try to make oatmeal in your rice cooker. Not recommended. No.

4. Actually, oatmeal does fine in my rice cooker.
The texture is a bit different than from the micro, but it is good.

7. just what i needed huh? another appliance after the feng shui
i usually did rice in my veggie steamer but nights like tonight I need both

tonight's menu

Sauteed Chicken breast with mushrooms in Yosida Sauce
Tarragon Brown Rice
Steamed Asparagas


but honestly we're only having rice so I can try my new $2 toy :bounce:

8. I looooove my rice cooker.
It is good feng shui, trust me. I make rice all the time now, cause it is so easy. And I make brown, so it is nutritious, too.

Now, if I only had some mushrooms, I'd make your Tarragon Brown Rice and put sauteed mushrooms (one of the recipes from the other thread) on top.

(I guess it's about time for me to make dinner! I'm salivating just imagining the recipes in these C&B threads!)

6. Brown rice is fine, as well as pretty much any grain.
Quinoa, buckwheat, whatever, seems to do fine in mine, although I do have a different brand.

..... we love ours and use it often. When we do rice its either rissoto or rice in the rice cooker.

I used to make rice pilaf a lot, but not so much anymore. Neraly as much effort as risotto but not nearly as good. And not good for just steamed rice.

On edit .... didja ever try just plain old steamed rice with a healthy sprinkling of Mrs Dash? Cheap and good.

For a real kick, steamed rice sprinkled with Old Bay.

15. yup that's my favorite but the old bay sounds very interesting!
that's what I did last night, brown rice with Mrs Dash and tarragon

if you get a sec, tell me of Rice Pilaf would you please?
