Edited on Tue May-23-06 09:42 PM by KyndCulture
I got some ham today that was on mad sale... I have some black beans in the cupboard... I'm thinking a crock pot recipe is in order.

What else do you guys love that's made with ham?

2. Since there was Wonder bread discussed here,
I might add that a real treat from my childhood was ham salad:

finely chopped ham
pickle relish
mayonnaise or Miracle Whip.
on Wonder bread

It's a wonder I didn't get rickets.

It's so good, though.

What kind of ham? Hams confuse me. I should learn about them.

4. Hams confuse me too.
This happens to be 8 lbs from the deli of fully cooked hickory smoked ham that I got for $4.99... it was too good of a deal to pass up. It's not sliced or anything, I had them leave it whole so I could use it however I needed to.

3. Ham salad
I haven't had it in a brazillian years.

I loved it as a kid.

I used to buy sammiches of it from the Roach Coach at the end of the Minesweeper pier.

I used to buy it in the cafateria when i worked (a year) in a factory

Last time I made I was the young father of small children and still with *that other** wife.

Made with ground ham and ground lean pork and fresh bread crumbs and egg and milk and a bit of dry mustard, and basted with a brown sugar-cider vinegar glaze while baking.

11. Here's what I would do:
After making a meal or two (and of course using the bone for some split pea soup), I'd dice some up into small pieces and freeze it in batches of about 1/2-1 cup in little baggies or something. Then, whenever you want to make something like an omelette, or add flavor to a soup, or whatever... it's there, ready to go.

12. Some of my tried and true favorite recipes.
BROWN SUGAR AND ORANGE JUICE HAM GLAZE
1 sm. can frozen orange juice
1/2 can crushed pineapple
1/2 c.+ brown sugar
1/2 c.+ sugar
1/2 tsp. cloves

Mix well together all ingredients, simmer over low heat until the sugars have dissolved. Can use 1/2 cup of sugars, add more if needed. All depends on taste. Baste your favorite ham with this

COLA BAKED HAM
1/2 ham (5-6 lb.)
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. coca cola
1 c. crushed pineapple (optional)

Wash ham thoroughly. Rub fat side with brown sugar. Pour coca cola over ham. Pour crushed pineapple over ham. Bake at 450 degrees for 3 hours. Makes 6 servings.

HONEY PINEAPPLE BAKED HAM
1 (10-12 lb.) cured ham
1 c. pineapple juice
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 c. honey
1 tbsp. whole cloves
5 pineapple slices

Wipe ham with damp cloth. Place ham in uncovered shallow roasting pan, fat side up. Then bake in a 325 degree oven, allowing about 20 minutes per pound of ham. About 45 minutes before ham has finished baking, remove from oven. Skin, score fat, and dot with whole cloves. Combine pineapple juice, lemon juice, and honey. Heat to the boiling point. Remove from heat immediately and pour over the ham. Return ham to oven and bake approximately 45 minutes or until interior temperature is 170 degrees. To serve: Garnish with sautéed pineapple slices and fresh mint.
