I'm looking for a dishwasher safe cookie sheet

I've come across the All-Clad stainless steel ones. Has anyone had experience using any sort of dishwasher safe sheets that they can recommend?

1. eleny, there's really no such thing

The metal, and even the color of the metal, affect how the cookies turn out. Dark colored ones transfer heat (even though the cookie sheet is so thin) differently from light ones. Dark ones are coated steel and light ones are aluminum. Stainless is a very poor transmitter of heat and very uneven. The cookie sheets will look good and will tolerate well a trip through the dishwasher, but their essential job - baking cookies - is poor.

You might want to consider a Silpat. That will keep the cookie sheets clean and will release the cookies easily. They're a medium color, but they have little metalic threads inside them that transmit heat in more or less the average of dark and light cookie sheets.

By the way, buy only a Silpat brand mat. The plain silicone mats (without the little threads embedded in the silicone) are less than worthless. A Silpat isn't cheap (about $20 for one sheet the size of a cookie sheet) but they last damn near forever and are useful for far more than cookies. I'll be using mine tonight when I make crab cakes. Even the most tender of crab cakes won't stick to it.

2. Excellent advice

I'd add the caveat that the abiltiy to run things through the dishwasher shouldn't be the key attribute to look for. Some of the finest cooking equipment out there, like anodized aluminum cookware (Calphalon, Circulon and others) are superior cookware that can't be put into the dishwasher.

Baking gear falls into that category, and dark colored pans like the cheapest Baker's Secret coated aluminum will yield superior results to the priciest stainless. This goes for bread pans, cake pans, and pie tins as well as cookie sheets.

The Silpat was a great suggestion, but there will always be stray goo on a cookie sheet from an occasional drop cookie that drips on the way to its resting place. The best attitude is that some things are worth washing by hand, and bakeware is firmly in that category.

I have some early Magnalite aluminum cookware that I'd never part with. It cooks like a dream and is washed lovingly by hand.

3. I have a Silpat for my cookie sheets and love it

But I also use my cookie sheet in the oven to catch drips like when I bake pies, lasagna and such. Can I use my Silpat in the sheet for those occasions, too?

The reason I went hunting is because I put my cookie sheet in the dishwasher one night before going to bed. Next morning when I emptied the d/w, the sheet was dry but had a lot of rust.

Thanks for the info on conductivity. That's more important than my washing the sheets. I have a Vollrath stainless lasagna pan and it bakes like a dream and washes up beautifully in the d/w. But lasagna is not a cookie!

5. That's an interesting question ...... Silpat as drip pan .....

I suppose it would work just fine.

If I were baking something drippy, though, I'd line a sheet pan or other shallow pan in foil and call it a day.

I use foil to line pans for all sorts of oven baking. A V-8 moment!

6. Mine always get rusty

and stain the dishwasher. It looks like shit. Is there anything I can use to get the rust stains out of the dishwasher ?

7. Two products will get those rust stains out

CLR or Bar Keeper's Friend. If your dishwasher interior is painted metal or stainless, either product will work. If it is plastic, you may want to stick with the Bar Keepr's.

9. I got two heavy aluminum ones up here at Cooksmart

They are Lincoln Wear-evers made in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. They're almost indestructible, as far as I can tell, and they're lighter colored, so no scorching. I use parchment paper under greasy cookies to help them slip off.
