Last week when my August issue of Southern Living came, it had the prettiest picture of fresh herbs in a variety of glasses, set on a tray in the window.
The idea is to clip and bring in sprigs of herbs. Then put them in water in an arrangement of interesting glasses. They say the sprigs will last about 5 days. So far, mine have lasted five days and some still look very perky. I've never had a lot of luck keeping fresh herbs, so end up having to search for my shoes and go out to the gardens while I'm cooking. To make matters worse, instead of an herb garden, ours are tucked into flower beds in various parts of they yard. It's ok, but with the humidity, rain (and I get in the mood to cook more when it rains), whatever the idea of having them sitting in a pretty arrangement in the window is really nice. Since they're sprigs in glasses of water, not in a pot of dirt, my less than green thumb isn't an issue.
Right now, I have oregano, basil, thyme, tarragon, chives, parsley, rosemary, mint and dill. I pulled out some odd stemware and glasses and it looks so pretty and I can just pinch off what I need as quickly as grabbing dried herbs.
If you want to see what it looks like and don't get Southern Living, take a look when you're standing in the check out line. It's the August issue and right in the front of the magazine on page 16.
