Frozen sangria or sangria slush
Somebody at work today had a catalog from "Tastefully Simple," and this Sangria slush drink mix was recommended:

http://www.tastefullysimple.com/Cultures/en-US/Products/SambaSangriaSlushDrinkMix296208.htm?CatalogNavigationBreadCrumbs=ClientCatalog;

It sounds like a great idea, but I didn't order any because I'm guessing it's loaded with sugar. Does anybody have a recipe for something like this but emphasizing real fruit or fruit juice and not too much sugar?

1. It looked so good I ran out and googled
sangria slush mix recipe and there was a plethora that included fresh juice..this is the first one a grabbed:

1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple
2 1/2 cups dry red wine
1 1/2 cups orange juice
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
lemon, rind of, for garnish if desired
Directions
Several hours before serving: Blend pineapple, red wine, orange juice, lemon juice and sugar in a blender at high speed for about 20 to 30 seconds.
Be sure all sugar is dissolved.
Pour mixture into a 9 X 9 inch baking pan or something similar.
FREEZE mixture in the freezer.
When ready to serve, take pan from freezer and let stand at room temp until softened.
Stir with a spoon until semi-thawed then spoon into wine glasses.
Garnish with lemon peel, if desired.

Wondering if you could subsitute Splenda for the sugar? Probably yes.

2. Thanks! I got one from "the Google," too!
Sangria Slush

Ingredients:
1 (20-ounce) can pineapple chunks in juice, drained
2 (11-ounce) cans mandarin oranges in light syrup, drained
2 cups burgundy or other red wine, chilled and divided
¼ cup plus 2 tbsp frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed and undiluted
1 cup club soda, chilled
orange rind curls
Preparation:

Fruit slushes are partially-frozen blends of pureed fruits and juices. Serve them immediately at the point of pourable iceness.

1. Set aside 8 pineapple chunks. Place remaining pineapple and oranges in a single layer on a baking sheet; freeze for 2 hours or until firm.

2. Position knife blade in food processor bowl; add fruit, and process for 30 seconds. Add 1 cup wine and lemonade concentrate; process until smooth. Pour into a large pitcher; add remaining 1 cup wine and club soda, stirring well.

3. Pour into individual glasses; garnish each with a reserved pineapple chunk and an orange rind curl. Serve immediately.

Yields about 6 cups (approximately 121 calories per ¾-cup serving).

Nutrition facts per ¾-cup serving: about 0.2 g protein, 20.5 g carbohydrate, 0 g fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 15 mg sodium, 0.5 mg iron, 11 mg calcium

An electric blender may be used instead of a food processor. It may be necessary to prepare the beverage in batches because a blender container is generally smaller than a food processor bowl.

4. That's how I felt!
It was a hot afternoon, an hour commute, and my car's air conditioning is broken -- and I kept thinking about that sangria slush. I guess this is like Pampered Chef in the sense that it's individuals holding parties, and I'm told there was a party in which the sangria slush was a big hit. So they were ordering it, but I couldn't bring myself to, considering the likely amount of sugar.

Still, on the way home, I'm thinking -- Is it like granita? Is it spoonable? I wonder whether it's more orangey or more berryish? Would it take a Zin or would it be better with a Merlot? How refreshing *would* that be right about now? etc. etc...

So I just went to the store and got ingredients! :D

7. You beat me to it!
But see, I was over in another thread having taunting Nutella sex in front of some guy named Husb2

I so feel his pain, but at least I know he may be having Sangria Slush!

We are just in the beginning of the same kind of diet here. My hubby's brother a couple weeks ago had a heart attack and got some stents in while he was in Vegas with his annual boys watching MCAA tournament mess....the kicker is, he is incredibly fit, plays basketball each week and in tournaments all year (he actually holds a small college record when he was in school for 3 point buckets, his name and face was on ESPN..we were all really excited to watch that show)...ANYWAY, the real scary point is his age...he is 38..and he had his heart attack one year to the day after his mother did, and SHE had her heart attack around the same age her father did (he died from his)

My husband's brother's cardiologist said based on the type of heart attack he had and the blockage he had, that the other siblings ought to be get the doctor on a treadmill right away, because it was one of those genetic things. My hubs, who is fit as a fiddle from the belly button down, is balking at a cholesterol test and a stress test. Says he wants to get a little more fit before he does. I argue that fitness level mean squat on a stress test, all they want you to do it hit some target heart rates and they watch that and how your blood pressure works...etc. PLUS, he has never had a fasting blood test. He has no problem having his colon looked at, and I THINK his resistance to this is fear. It has become a bit of a contentious issue between us, so I used myself as a special case to change his diet for the better. Of course it is good for me too.

My hubs is the greatest, but I tell you, I am frightened that he will not do this. I really do understand he may be afraid, and now I am starting to sounds naggy about it. I have actually enlisted the aid of his brothers in this (they are appalled too that at my hubs age of 46 he has never had blood work done for this stuff) The one that had the heart attack is scheduled to contact him next week...god I hope he talks some sense into him.

8. I know what you mean.
Hopefully he'll listen to his brother! H2S didn't have anyone in his family close to his age going through heart problems, but his mother had them, and she nagged him a lot. He didn't heed any of it. His own heart attack was a wake-up call though, and that changed everything. (He was just lucky it was a mild one and did no damage to the heart muscle.)

Btw, I'm sipping sangria slush from the recipe I posted. It's okay, not all I'd hoped for. I think I'll try yours or another one sometime. Meanwhile, I put the leftover blended mix in the freezer (before the last step of more wine and club soda so that it'd freeze better), so maybe it'll get icier. I need to have the neighbors over to drink this so I can experiment with another one. :D

Sangria is so temperamental...I think it is a drink that needs a day of aging.

Thanks...I knew you would...I know we will get hubs in to the doc, all I have to do is have his mother freak on him last of all...the guilt will be too overwhelming :)

6. Ah, man...
that looks so tempting. We don't have alcohol in the house at all. It was a pact we made before we got married. But man, oh man I really miss a glass of wine once in awhile and would love to try that. :hi:
