I've found different recipes. The basics are simple.
There is one big difference in them though. Some of the recipes call for you to cook the corned beef first thean add other stuff, and some you get to do it all at once.
What has worked best for you? Any other tips are appreciated :)

1. 've never cooked it all at once because I feel that the cabbage |
|
would be overcooked for my tastes after the process is through. It's been too long for me since the last time I cooked this, but darn, you have me craving it now!

2. That is what I'm thinking |
|
I want all the flavors to meld but don't want overdone cabbage.
So far.. I plan to put all my roots in with the meat as it cooks then adding cabbage near the end so I can smell up the house :D
Thanks.

3. The meat takes substantially longer to cook than any |
|
of your other stuff. If you want the flavors to meld, why not put a couple of potatoes and, if you are using them, carrots and celery in at the beginning, but stage the addition of the veggies you plan to servewith your corned beef until you have only the time left to cook them to your preference.

4. I cook my corned beef w/spices first, |
|
take it out when it is almost done, let cool, in the mean time, I put the carrots, potatoes and onions in the pot. Let that cook for a while, then slice the corned beef and put that back in and cook til almost done, then, add the cabbage on top so that it doesn't over cook. That way the cabbage comes out tender but not over done. YUM!

5. I like to steam the cabbage on the side |
|
Cut it in wedges and steam it. Even in a waterless pot if no steamer available. The cabbage is a bright green color and keeps its unique flavor.
I love corned beef and hope you're having good success!
