"Heat" by Bill Buford
Mr.sazemisery received this for Christmas. I finished reading it last night. A journalist's journey into the life of a restaurant kitchen (Mario Batali's Babbo).

What really moved me was after his stint in the restaurant kitchen, he felt he wanted to experience Italian food by learning to prepare it. So he took three extensive trips to Italy and worked in one restaurant learning pasta and then two trips to a butcher shop in Tuscany. Historically, it was very interesting as he pondered questions like, "Who first added the egg to pasta?", "Did Catherine de Medici take the secrets of the cuisine of Italy to France with her?".

Stinky, if you haven't read this I think you would enjoy it.

1. Hahaha
I got it for Christmas last year from my sister-in-law (Sparkly's sister - a published cookbook author and major league foodie). I very much enjoyed it. I laughed out loud, too, knowing just how true it all is.

2. I couldn't figure out why his wife let him get away with that.
She must be an incredibly tolerant person.

4. You know I did wonder that at the time, too.
But then we don't know what their marriage is like so maybe she enjoyed the long separations. LOL

5. True on the separation part, but bringing an
entire pig and cutting it up in the kitchen? Not in this life.

6. Yeah, I forgot about that.
Not in my kitchen, either, and I live out in a little farm house! LOL

3. I read it last year, too.
Checked it outta the library. I couldn't put it down. Excellent read, especially the parts when he was in Italy. Those were the parts that interested me the most, anyway.

I had only seen Batali a couple of times and really liked his program, but I had no idea he was such a wildass till I read that book. LOL

Batten down the hatches again tonight! Ugh! :hi:

7. The image of Batali grubbing through the garbage
trying to find inspiration for something new and different will always stay with me.
