Gingerbread Houses
Edited on Sat Nov-28-09 09:02 PM by yellerpup
Jury duty finished, we dined out on enchiladas for Thanksgiving then had a swell time this afternoon playing with icing and eating candy like a kid while making the first gingerbread house I've done for a long time. Looking forward to doing lots of baking over the holidays.

Santa's (Lindt) reindeer look suspiciously like bunnies don't they? :-)

1. Looks like fun
My major dessert trick is chocolate chip cookies, but maybe it's time to consider branching out.

2. It was fun. Actually, it felt exactly like play.
I didn't stress over getting anything perfect. I bought a kit at Costco (made in Canada) which made it easy, but I will make a chocolate gingerbread cake or a pear-gingerbread upside down cake to serve and use the the little house I made this afternoon as decor. I did save all the leftover gummy bears, raspberries, gumdrops, etc., and put them in a bowl so guests can pick at the candy bowl and not at the house. I'll give it away to the kid who is most fascinated by it...we usually do an open house for the neighbors and there are quite a few young families in the building. I recommend decorating a gingerbread as a sweet way to relax. :hi:

3. Was that the kit from Costco?
I picked one up for my daughter the other day. (Mine came with a tree as well as a house that's why I'm wondering if it's the same one) If it's the same one...I'm impressed and excited to see how hers will come out.

4. Yep! Costco had them out yesterday afternoon--the most deserted I've ever
seen our local store. The price was right, and I suddenly had a holiday project. I went out this afternoon and bought SnowCaps, gummy bears, etc., but wasn't able to find the big wafer-size snow caps. Your daughter will enjoy herself playing with this, I'm sure. This was just the thing to put me into the holiday spirit! :hi:

5. I love it!
I've made maybe one gingerbread house ever. Then I made one out of graham crackers--not so easy to glue them together. And I also made one once out of sugar cubes. I painted them with red food coloring so they looked like bricks.

7. Red bricks!
That must have looked fabulous! I helped a friend decorate a birthday cake with graham cracker backdrops once--not so simple as a person might suspect. I had fun with this gingerbread house. The last time I made one I used ice cream cones for trees. Happy holidays! :hi:

6. That's such a happy looking house!
I have a kit from last year that I vowed to get done this year. Thanks for the inspiration.
