Yesterday I splurged and bought a box of mixed salad greens. |
|
They looked nice and fresh, not like the ones that come in plastic bags that our stores hang on big hooks. I usually buy Romaine or Escarole by the head. Wanted a change.
All of these packages of greens say pre-washed.
Never in my life would I not wash this stuff. Even with this nice fresh plastic box, I found lettuces that I threw out. Some fragile ones get a little mushy looking and also, I can never understand how a machine can tell if there is a bug or something in the curl of a leaf. Same for spinach. After a quick trip in the spinner, great.
Do you all wash prepackaged-already washed-greens?

I also wash vegetables that I intend to peel before I peel them. There are many opportunities for produce to either become contaminated between the field and the market or even after it's on your own chopping board. I make it a practice to wash everything well every time.

3. My advice, avoid mixes that have red leaf lettuce. |
|
The red lettuce turns to slime faster than anything else in the mix, and it will contaminate the whole box.

4. I don't buy the bagged stuff anymore unless I need a whole mess of baby spinach. |
|
I wasn't washing it, figured it said pre-washed, so when it started turning up contaminated I just quit buying it altogether unless I am gonna COOK the greens. Ralph's carries bagged turnip/collard greens that make a nice blend TO COOK.
Otherwise, I buy the whole greens and do all the cleaning and prep work myself, thank you.

Says they're washed three times. I don't wash them before using. Just toss 'em in a bowl and eat 'em. :D
