Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!!
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 06:30 PM by Sparkly
So I was rooting around in our pantry closet, trying to decide what kind of beans to put in my minestrone, when out of the blue a 28-oz can of Cento tomatoes LEAPED off a 5-foot-high shelf and landed on my foot. It cleverly executed a corkscrew maneuver in mid-air in order to land at an angle designed to inflict maximum impact on my foot with its edge.

I'm not sure if this is part of a wider conspiracy among canned tomatoes or whether it's limited to the rascally Italian ones, but I just thought I'd post a warning in case your tomatoes attack you, as well. If it happens to anyone else, I think we should demand a recall.

(It's possible the ordinary Cento's are upset about falling out of favor since the San Marzano's took over, and thus pretend to "fall" off the shelf in revenge -- as IF I ever touched them! As IF my pantry closet isn't just as organized as, well, my desk!)

Thank you for your attention. Stay safe. :scared:

1. Banish them all to the floor
Even the San Marzanos. That's what I did.

Now, sit your butt down, put your foot up and be treated like a queen. I sure hope nothing got broken.

5. I've never
Suffered from a tomato attack. I have been assaulted by a beef roast that jumped out of the freezer right onto my instep. I'll be sure to keep an eye on those tomatoes and thanks for the heads-up. ;)

Ice it, elevate it and ice it a little more. Boy! Are you in for a killer black and blue foot!

and she has a dance rehearsal tomorrow night. The foot's pretty sore. The can's edge caught her right on the top of her foot where's there's just skin and bone.

She ain't limpin' .... but she's sore.

Pooooooor Sparkly ....

18. Ouch!
Your post made my eyes tear. I remember that pain so vividly. That's exactly where the beef roast hit my foot. It's the worst possible spot because there's no "meat" there to absorb the whack a little.

Poor Sparkly. :(

8. The scene of the crime ...... any forensics experts here?
Here's the scene of the crime ... Sparkly's imitation of MgGee's closet.

And here's the guilty can. Its the yellow Cento can on the left. The Progresso can was very well behaved through the entire ordeal.

And here's the aftermath of this wanton and senseless attack. Charges, as of this evening, remain pending against the National Tomato Union, the growers, the canners, and the makers of that smart-ass shade of yellow on the can label.

PS ..... does everyone like the orange and yellow '70's shelf paper? We're quite proud of that! During the investigation, the style police were called in to observe this fashion travesty. The situation remains under investigation as we go to press.

I live alone and I still have stuff stacked up like that!

Hope Sparkly is doing better today... Hope you got some sleep last night, H2S

16. I got attacked once by tomato
ketchup! I was grocery shopping with my oldest daughter (now 26) when she was an infant and had picked her up out of the cart seat. I put a glass bottle of ketchup in the top part of the basket and forgot that the plastic flap was up so her legs could fit through. The bottle slipped right through and fell onto my big toe. Amazingly, the bottle didn't break but the pain was so bad, I had to walk up and down the aisle with my baby for a couple of minutes, fighting back tears and nausea. A month or so later, I lost the toenail. :(

What did we ever do to tomatoes to deserve such treatment?

I hope you're better soon!

17. Tamaddas have been pissed ever since we moved them from the
veggie group to the 'fruit' group. Everyone knows tamaddas are male and homophobic.

22. I Was Once Attacked by a Large Package of Frozen Pork Chops
For several years after, any foot injury to myself or the person who was with me at the time, no matter how slight, was announced with the scream, "pork chops!"

23. Discussed today when I was teaching a class of preschoolers...
I teach movement/music classes, and we begin sitting in a circle with legs stretched out, bare feet collected in the center. I do have a tendency to injure my feet a lot.

"What's that on your foot?"

"Oh, that's where I cut my toe on the corner of a desk." (Puzzled looks.)

"No, not that, THAT."

"Oh, that's from a bad, bad pair of shoes." (Curious looks.)

"No, not that, THAT."

"Oh, that's where I dropped a can of tomatoes on my foot." (Fascinated looks.) "Actually it jumped off the shelf and attacked me." (Smiles and giggles.)

"No, not that, THAT!"

Then I realized I had a sticker stuck to the bottom of my foot. :dunce:
