Can spammers add themselves to your contact list?

I just looked through my hotmail contacts and there were about 5-6 names and e-mail addresses I did not recognize in there. The name would be just the e-mail name. I went through and deleted them but wondered if they now managed to add themselves to your contact list so they can get the spam to come through.
