FTP Server suggestions?
Anyone know of a good, secure and free FTP server for a windows machine?

I have some files I'd like to be accessible whilst I'm at work, but don't particularly want to become some warez-group's mirror.

Thanks.

1. You want a place to store fils online
in storage space like FTP, or do you want a program to use to FTP?

There are a lot of places to store files online--one that I use is called http://www.web-a-file.com, which allows storage of up to 40MB.

As far as a program, WS_FTP LE is free for home or personal use. Other popular ones include CuteFTP, Bulletproof FTP and FTP Voyager.

2. I wouldn't use FTP
FTP is not a terribly secure protocol, I did the same thing by setting up a secure SSH connection via a Linux machine at home and windows. I think you can do the same with two windows machines. You can use a program called Cygwin on windows, I used it as client to my Linux box which was running the SSH server. The key is that the connection is much more secure and would be less likely to be found since it is not an FTP server. It also comes in handy to get around WebSense, a net blocker used by companies to filter the web for employees. Set up the secure SSH tunnel, then connect via a proxy to the Internet.

3. Do it the other way around, if you have to do it at all
Use the ftp server at your job to mirror the files you need. Just set up a script to run sftp on those files while you sleep, then retrieve them when you get to work. Believe me, unless you are well and truly prepared to exercise due diligence, you do not want to have any oddball extra services available for the script kiddies to get hold of, especially if they permit access to private or work-related information.

Above all, talk to your network admins to see how they'd prefer you to handle it. Who knows? They may even have a VPN telecommuting setup available that you didn't know about, and you can put your home computer directly on the company net for whenever you need it.

4. Other thing that might interest you
http://www.no-ip.com/

You can get, for free, a short, mnemonic name for your home machine without registering a domain, and even if your IP is dynamic.

About the server, if you only want to READ files FROM your machine, I'd suggest a Web server. Apache runs on Windows too: http://www.apache.org/dyn/closer.cgi/httpd/binaries/win32

5. Thanks...
I'd not considered running a webserver... I'll look into it.

A general thanks to everyone else who's contributed a possible solution... it's much appreciated.

6. BulletProof
I've been using BulletProof FTP Server for a while now and I love it. Small footprint, low on resources, lots of config options. Also, because its a relatively unknown product it is generally immune to a lot of the vulnerabilities inherent in something like say, IIS.

I believe a trial version is available
