HP DVD 1040 i
Installed a DVD burner/player into my computer a month or two ago. It worked just fine. I use windows xp and run 2 gigs of ram. Just lately when I try to burn a CD I get the error messege that no burner is recognized. I've burned lots of CD's before with no problem at all. The Device will still play DVD movies and will play CD music but it will not burn. I deleted it from the computer hoping that it would reinstall the drivers from windows but nothing changed. I've used a couple of different software programs and they all say they cannot find a burner on my computer...hmmmm...any suggestions? Does HP really suck? I went to their website and could not find the drivers for this device. Something else kinda weird...the box says it is a 1040i, but my device manager calls it a 1040d.
Next time I'll just get a sony...

1. Probably needs a firmware update
HP is notorious about not getting the latest firmware/drivers on their page. They usually have a fix but you have to email and the tech will send you an updated firmware.

2. Thanks for the reply!
Here is what HP e-mailed me back:

"Thank you for contacting HP Optical Drive Support. Given your situation, would you please disconnect any other optical drive(ifexists),then check if the drive has been properly recognized by BIOS duringbooting up first? If you already have more than one drives installed on your PC, please make surethe jumper settings were properly set for your drives. And if there is any abnormal mark in Device Manager? If exists, please try todelete it,and retry to seach all hardware changes. check if there is anyimprovement?Still no help, please install the latest drivers for the IDE controller andmotherboard of your computer check whether the problems remain the same. And will you please install the drive in another PC for further diagnose?Any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Best regards,"

3. That email is what I call "Standard Answer 35B"
If you didn't have the jumper settings right, it never would have worked in the first place. The IDE is the flat ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard. The only part that might help is to try the drive on another computer. If it doesn't work there, it's a bad drive. If it works there, then something is wrong on yours. Did you have any windows updates installed recently?

5. It should be under warranty
That's a newer model. I'd get it exchanged or refunded. I quick google did turn this up..

You could buy a $25 samsung/plextor/liteon while you get the HP RMAed or refunded. Nothing wrong with having two burners. Here's a good place to start..
